Stan
2-1/2" all the way through, including turbo mufflers. all fabricated on the car by a local muffler shop. I have put the crossover pipe in a non-traditional location.

Probably NOT what you are looking for but I just had this finished. All Stainless, 1 3/4 into 1 7/8 then into 3" rest the way out.

Those empty resonator cans really quiet the car down. There are short borla turbo muffs further back. All 2.5".

2" equal length header primaries into 4" collector, 3.5" pipes from collector to bullet mufflers, 2.5" tail pipes. Bullet mufflers were too loud and were replaced with Flowmaster 40 series mufflers, added crossover pipe like Bill's at point where exhaust pipes are closest together near front of mufflers.

Now we're talking guys...

Thanks a lot. These are what I need...space is the problem creating good performing, sounding exhaust on these cars.

It's no big deal if you have lotsa room...but difficult in these cars.

Pics like these of the tight spots are what I'm needing the most...and ingenious cures like your cans AZ. Did you make those...what length/diameter are they?

Thanks...Stan

The 56 has 2 1/2in all the way. Since there was never such a thing a 2 1/2in pipe on the 62-earlier cars, it has to be custom fabricated by a VERY PROFICIENT muffler person.

The 56-7 rear exahust bezels are not big enough for 2 1/2in pipe, so I went with 61-2 style tail pipe and used 61-2 style tail pipe hangers. I replaced the original bolt in the clamp with a longer bolt to allow the clamp to open up for the 2 1/2in pipe.

Since there was never such a thing as 2 1/2in pipe on the 62-earlier cars, there also was never such a thing as 2 1/2in clamps/hangers. So I had to fabricate mine from 2 1/2in stainless clamps and stainless sheetmetat which I had welded together.

I have 22" magnaflow round mufflers that I'm going to have to do something to, like an X pipe or H pipe close to the mufflers, or maybe cans like AZ's.

I've got nice exhaust ...but limited room, so I would like to do just one thing that would make the most difference in sound...but still limit the heat radiation/exposure under the seat/floor area as much as possible. In fact that's a must...I've got tons of time in the underbody insulation.

The sound I have is terrible ...something I have to tone down or just scrap it and start all over. My muffler guy suggest an X pipe...but he acts like it won't make a big difference...maybe just lower the tone a little.

Doug:
If you had room for one thing...would it be the "can" or the "crossover" to mellow the tone?

Bill:
Did you add your crossover later or do it all at the same time (I'm wondering if you had a comparison before and after..)?

Charles:
How about you...all at once or in two different sessions when installing the crossover? ...regarding a tone change based on adding the crossover only?

Thanks..Stan

Thanks Tom...

Very nice system! The Sanderson D-port block hugger headers needed to clear my rack and pinion steering column has 2-1/4" collectors...so 2-12 " is a little bigger than should use ..I guess.

I thought some systems come off the stock cast manifolds at 2-1/2" then immediately bell to 2 inch...which I always wondered about.

I'm thinking mandrell bent 2" lead off pipe is likely about the same restriction as typical crush bent 2-1/4" muffler shop pipe.

One exhaust calculator shows 2-1/4 exhaust is good up to 379 HP...see link.

http://www.exhaustvideos.com/faq/how...pipe-diameter/

That seems small these days...but I still have a 1980 SB chevy pickup with a 1972 Malibu stock 350 transplanted into it years ago.

That truck has 2" exhaust all the way back with 30" glasspacks. It still sounds great..and is runs very strong for a semi stock motor.

Here you go Stan,

2 & 1/4" Tube with Flow Master mufflers. Pretty tough to get it out behind the wheels (with my new suspension), but it is possible.

The first exhaust system I had on my '59 was a straight through system with spiral baffles inside the 3" pipes that exited in front of the rear wheels (picture below). It was so loud that when I cranked it up the first time my closest neighbor, who is about 1/2 mile away, came over to see if something had exploded. I added the bullet mufflers, which have no baffles inside, and exited the exhaust pipes under the rear of the car. That setup was still pretty loud so I replaced the bullets with Flowmasters 40's, which do have a small amount of baffling inside. The Flowmasters helped reduce the noise considerably. I later added the crossover pipe and and I believe it smoothed out the sound a little. If I want more noise I can easily replace the muffled system with my original straight through pipes and run it without baffles.

Stan
i have had 2 versions of crossovers, one added in the traditional location just off the exhaust manifolds and the one in the present position.

I agree with Stan, the crossover kinda sorta smoothes and mellows the sound moreso than anything else. it's been quite a while since mine were done, but I can remember being pleased with the results.

different car, same story..

i wanted to change the exhaust on my 4-cylinder base engine Solstice coupe to get the dual exhaust tip look of the GXP model. the cheapest way was to get a new Magnaflow system that fit the convertible (should have bit the bullet and gotten a oem system, Magnaflow knew what they were doing when they DIDN'T list it for the coupe even tho the systems are identical... hindsight...)

anyway, the coupe has a nasty drone harmonic due to it's enclosed interior (again, hindsight...) and GM apparently solved this problem by adding a baffled can in their oem exhaust similar to Doug's to eliminate the drone. the Magnaflow didn't have such an animal so i searched for something to eliminate the drone.

i found a moroso 'racing' muffler that has a similar baffle design to the ones Charles designed, short version, bought it, installed it; helped, but not as much as i had hoped, and i still have a drone (but one that i can live with, kinda sorta...)

moral, watch what you wish for, it may not come true.... 'noise' and harmonics aren't the same animals
