Default too much power?

This newer design Dana 36 had a stronger case, all cryo-hardened; lasted about 10 years. I am not hard on my cars.

Well, I'm glad that is not something I have to be concerned with.

If I was a betting man, I would bet on that not totally being too much power. I could be incorrect from the pics and lighting but is that some discoloration on the pinion gear pieces? The ring gear I'm not seeing the normal wear that would be present after 10 years of getting on it, so I would question the proper adjustment, especially with what appears to be the machining striations missing on some. I could be off tho from the lighting and pics. Probably shouldn't answer the question without seeing it in person.

Should also ask its maintenance history.

I'd speculate that your spider gear gave out first. That looks like an old "wound" in picture #5. (A crack that took a while to propagate.)

Painful!!

That is a bummer though...but 10 years of service from your D36 isn't bad. Now you're "forced" to upgrade.

Makes me even more happy that when the previous owner did the 383 motor in my 87 convertible he also put in a dana 44 with 3.73 gears.

What gears are you looking for? I have a D44 with 3.45 and kind of want 3.73 but I already barley get much out of 1st gear.
