Default Bose Repair/Replacement Guidance

Gents,

Lot's of threads in C4 forum regarding Bose repairs.. Symptom in my '91 ZR-1 is that the speakers crack/buzz when the head unit is powered up. Shall I simply replace all 4 Bose amps and check again, or is there a chance it's the head unit, which would need to be replaced?

Thanks for the guidance guys!

Did the sound deterioration start all at once?
Do you get any sound at all?
Did this happen on all four speakers at the same time?
Does it happen with CD as well as AM/FM?

I usually start at the speaker amps (exchanging Nissan Max 975s or 075s).
If one speaker amp exchange for a known good amp does not work...then Bose or CDM.

Last time I had issues I exchanged Bose for a known working Bose....found I had no sound after switching in a good Amp and good Bose. So exchanged CDMs and got all the sound back in great order.

If you have someone near by with a good Bose....it is about a 10 minute job to exchange a known working Bose for your Bose.

Same goes with amps....use the rear drivers side amp and exchange that for a known good amp.

Start with the easiest replacement and that be an amp....then the Bose.

Now if nothing as suggested above works.....have fun removing and exchanging the CDM

See Bose Speaker Amps and CDM Replace

The usual problem with Bose is the CD player does not take and run a CD.....that is Doc Dons department.

I just got finished installing the factory Bose Gold system back in my 90. When I got the car it had a aftermarket stereo which sounded like crap. I went in search for speakers, amps and the control head. Luckily for me the CDM was still under the dash.

My experience with finding amps was most of those that come from 90-96 vettes are pretty beat up. If you are handy with soldering circuit boards you can replace the capacitors yourself and save a lot of money. This article is a gold mine of information with regards to the amps http://www.zr1netregistry.com/Portals/0/Bose2.pdf. Also take a look at this post https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-and-more.html.

A good alternative amp is those found in the Nissan 95-99 Maxima and Infiniti I30 cars. I'm currently using them in the front and they sound great. They are the Sigma 975 series amps. The part number for the fronts are 176059-3321 and the rears are 176059-3322 and I will say the ones I've seen so far are in much better shape then the ones that came from the vette and are usually cheaper.

The Corvette Store is selling a new style amp that eliminates many of the trouble sum capacitors. Little prices but it all depends on what you want to do. http://www.corvettestoreonline.com/s...Late-1996.html

The bottom line is to keep the factory Bose. In my honest opinion there is no better sound system for the C4.

Here is a short list of the capacitors and the problems that each one will exhibit. I put this together from other post I have read.

C4 Bose Amps

Capacitor C172 affect volume and sound quality
Capacitor C7 & C8 Worling and squealing
Capacitor C31 Popping sound
Capacitor C203 Bass distortion
Capacitor C16 Popping & squealing
Capacitor C19 & C 25 Generally don't go bad

The rest will make the squeaks and squeals

Here is a pic of a typical board.

Great information...thanks
But if I can pick up working Nissan amps for $5-$7 that is the route I go

I actually think the Nissan Bose amps work better for some reason. I just purchase two for the rear for when those go bad.

Great feedback guys! Thanks.. I'm fine with circuit board work, but if I can find replacement amps, that's the way I'd rather go. If I understand correctly, no one makes a "new" replacement, they're all refurbished, yes?

Can you guys point to a source for good Nissan Amps? (I had a Bose system in my Maxima, and it was superb!)..

Thanks again for the help and the threads!

Corvette Store Online Looks like the sell a newer style for $159.00. I got one in a used speaker I purchase from a user on this forum and it looked new. The Nissan amp I found on eBay by searching "nissan bose". They popup often and sometime come with the speaker enclosure.

Hey Dom, just went out and dropped in a CD to get clean music signal to the amps. ONLY THE DRIVER REAR is out! Other three are fine. Given the fact that one went out, I'll probably replace both rear units.

Are these from MidAmerica not any good??

Thanks!

I know you are looking for the rear amps but this is a good price on 2 front Nissan amps. This seller had two sets and I bought one set last week for my 90 and they work great.

It's a matter of personal choice but I do like how you fit the screen in.
