C8 Corvette DCT: Engineers Reveal What Makes That Gearbox So Special

Some frequently asked questions about the C8 Corvette DCT reveal a few cool details about the transmission some may not be aware of.

Much ado has been made over the past few years about the C8 Corvette and its switch to a mid-engine layout, not to mention its impressive performance (and performance per dollar ratio), though that only served as the baseline compared to the Z06, E-Ray, and soon, the ZR1. However, one thing that doesn’t get a ton of attention by comparison is the C8 Corvette DCT – or dual-clutch transmission – though in all fairness, it probably should.

In a recent podcast from Corvette Today, GM’s Tadge Juechter, Harlan Charles, and Josh Holder touched on quite a wide array of topics, including the C8 Corvette DCT, specifically, shedding some very interesting light on the newer gearbox. The first comes courtesy of a fan question revolving around how the DCT filter monitor works, which is important given the fact that the initial replacement is set for 7,500 miles – leaving one to wonder, when should the next one happen?

Charles points out that the second change should take place at 22,500 miles, and that interval remains the same thereafter. Holder notes that there’s some confusion around this topic, but the first swap was intentionally set earlier so that customers can get it replaced alongside the oil and filter for convenience sake. Since a lot of C8 owners don’t drive their cars a ton, Holder also added that GM has extended filter coverage to three years, too.

Next up, we have some interesting details pertaining to the hydraulic system and how it operates, as well as a question pertaining to the replacement of the DCT external canister when it’s flushed. Holder notes that the hydraulic system flush forces transmission fluid through the replaceable filter. Dealers can complete this process easily via their special service tool, leaving many to wonder if they can DIY it at home. Holder notes that this isn’t necessary, however, as the fine filtering routine happens during normal driving anyway, meaning that one can change the transmission filter without going through that process.

Finally, the team addresses a question pertaining to the C8 Corvette DCT and manual mode, as one owner is wondering if using manual mode can lead to more wear and tear on the transmission versus automatic mode. Humorously, Juechter says “no,” but also adds that “if it did, Holder would be breaking cars left and right.” He adds that the transmission changes gears electronically whether or not its happening via a user’s command or the vehicle’s command, and in some cases, manual mode may actually lead to less shifting than leaving it up to the car itself.
