C8 Corvette vs American Muscle Cars (Guess Who Wins?)

You probably won’t be surprised to learn how much extra horsepower muscle cars needs to beat America’s (mid-engine) sports car.

With prices starting at just $58,900 it is not surprising that the C8 Corvette was the most popular premium sports car in Q3 2020. The Golden Bow Tie brand recently announced that it will not be able to meet all 2020 C8 Corvette orders. Nevertheless, some lucky customers are already pulling off some outrageous stunts in their mid-engine ‘Vettes.

YouTube channel Drag Racing and Car Stuff recently added a video in which an Accelerate Yellow Metallic Corvette can be seen drag racing aS550 Mustang GT, a Challenger R/T Scat Pack, a 4th-generation Chevrolet Camaro, and even a Hellcat Redeye. Equipped with its 6.2-liter LT2 V8 motor, the 495 HP C8 Camaro was not going to a match for the SRT Hellcat Redeye which was powered by a supercharged 797 HP 6.2-litre V8.

The Dodge Challenger managed to pull away from the Bowling Green sports car eventually but the quarter-mile sprint was a close race. The SRT Hellcat completed its quarter-mile run in 10.77 seconds and the Corvette managed to cross the finishing line in 11.37 seconds, just 0.6 seconds slower than the Challenger.

The stock C8 Corvette managed to improve upon its time during the second race against the S550 Ford Mustang GT. The ‘Vette completed the run in just 11.19 seconds beating Ford’s pony car which posted a 12.50-second quarter-mile time. Interestingly enough, Corvette’s most formidable opponent turned out to be yet another Chevrolet offering.

While racing against the 4th-generation Chevrolet Camaro, the C8 ‘Vette managed to cover the quarter-mile in 11.51 seconds which was 0.3 seconds faster than the muscle car that completed the run in 11.87 seconds. In the final race, the C8 faced off against a Challenger R/T Scat Pack and on paper at least, both cars are quite evenly matched. The powerplant in the Challenger R/T Scat Pack churns out 485 HP and 475 lb-ft of peak torque.

Interestingly enough, the Corvette managed to triumph over the Scat Pack with an 11.81-second quarter-mile time with the Challenger crossing the finishing line in 12.26 seconds. The Yellow Metallic Corvette delivered a consistent performance during all four runs and posted an average quarter-mile time of 11.5 seconds.
