Default Project 396: Got color!

Paint started in September
Painter had to deal with holidays, compressor quit, caught pneumonia, etc. but now we finally have some color on the old beast!

Still needs buff out, windshield, etc.

Pick her up 1st week in March. Yes, 2011.
Then the hard work starts in re-assembly, detailing, etc.

The paint looks great! But why didn't they mask off anything it looks as if there is overspray on everything. Shemp

Kind of like the way the factory did it I guess.
The engine area will be painted GM original black.
I will do the same to the rear under and wheel well areas.

Excellent color, looks like it will be beautiful. However, very sloppy painter, I hope he did everything else better than he did the masking.

KC John,

I guess I don't understand. See the overspray in this image on the inner fender?

That is exactly the way the factory did it, even huge sags. The engine area was not masked off. Granted there was no frame under there, but as far as the body (plastic parts), if we paint satin black over the body color, that is what the factory did, so what am I missing? Do you understand what I am saying?

On a $250,000 car , we don't want it messed up.

By the time it's done, a lot of cash and a lot of work and a lot of comments. All original except a temporary drivetrain 500 hp w 5-speed on 91 octane fuel to boot.

Nice color Larry, the car will look great in the sunshine.

I'm with the others though, your painter did not do you any favors by not masking the engine bay. I think you have a challange getting the steering gear, A-arms, chassis etc to look right.

What paint system was applied?

Default Cool Color Yes Indeed !

Man that Marooooon is slick and smooth, not to mention cool as he*l. I used a Dupont product called Hot Rod black in my engine area. It covered great and dried to the correct sheen IMO. Good luck and keep those pics posted.

What paint system was applied?
1. I had the whole engine bay area media blasted w baking soda. Perfect smooth surface.

2. That steering gearbox decided to start rusting so the painter primered all the bare metal in the engine bay. Applied some black satin GM restore paint as well. Now what I am thinking is to spray that steering gearbox that "Nu-Cast" paint so it looks like an original casting but won't rust. I know, that's not the way the factory did it, but hey we are making ever so slight "improvements" along the way. Like block and sanded smooth sides, for example. (Sorry John Z)

3. The A-Arms and chassis should be fine; just respray the black satin.

Worst case is re-media blast the whole area and start w bare metal again. I don't see that happening, though. It should be fine. Granted a little extra work.

4. My philosophy is to "restore" the car as much as possibe, "over restore the paint", and run a "temporary drive train" so that car can actually be enjoyed any time. (Except deep snows) Anyway, a little different than the next guy, but hey if we all thought the same, it would be a bit dull.

5. The paint system is PPG base coat/clear coat...$2349.85 in materials so far, but who is counting?

6. Sunshine should bring out the pop!

Earl,
Thanks for the encouragement. I will look at that Dupont "Hot Rod Black" for the bay area. We bought some GM product, don't have the reference now. Here is what was done after the media blast:

Should be close.
