The I was used as a number 1 on the engine assembly date. See Nolan Adams book, page 42 for reference.
My 65 fuelie engine has FII04HG, double I for nov.

The engine plants were directed by Chevrolet Engineering at the beginning of the 1957 model year to use the "I" character instead of the "1" character; you hardly ever see the "1" character used in an original pad stamp.
