Default 555" Dyno Testing-Auto Enthusiast Magazine

Part II of my 540"/555" engine in my car came out today in Auto Enthusiast magazine.

Last month we covered the rebuild and some parts changes. This month is baseline testing with all my old parts, a favorite high $$$ Braswell Dominator race carb against my old homebuilt Holley, a head swap from my old Ported Brodix 2Xtra's and ported Super Victor to a set of CNC Brodix 3Xtra's and a Brodix as cast intake (port matched)...and then a cam swap....then another carb swap. I was busy!! All the specs, dyno tests and flow numbers are included.

Coming soon will be Dominators against Holley EFI!!

Starts on page 88.

Hope everyone enjoys!

Another great article.

I know first-hand how the "my motor is just like his... except..." works. Absolutely true.

Waiting to see the head to head cam test next.

Unbelievable. All the more so when you consider that the basic engine design dates back to the 1963 Mk II "mystery" motor.

I'm interested in the cam test, too. My experience with tight LSA cams is that they idle too rough and don't have good street manners for whatever addtional power you might get out of them.

Of course, that's with my "puny" little 427.

In my motor you can see that it didn't like the single pattern cam with tight LSA. Not a perfect test because we changed a few things on the cam at the same time...but it definitely showed the trend. Probably would have been happy with the 850'ish HP if we hadn't just seen the 870's right before it! We spent all afternoon trying to find some combo to make that thing come alive and it just wasn't there. That cam would probably do well on a smaller motor with killer heads and some compression.

I did 35+ dyno pulls on that poor motor over two days!

This ought to be an interesting read - as usual. I'd just like to know where you find all of your free time.

He has lots of time Steve. Jim for the most part, sits around with his Jack & Diet Coke in hand, holding court, tempting more victims with his lure of more horsepower; mean while he has tricked all the rest of us into doing work you could not normally pay us to do.

That is why we call him the TEMPTER. Do not look him in the eye or you will have you engine out and in pieces.

Joe

Yeah, devildog, you're right. Jim's about talked me into putting in a 540, and putting the "correct" 427 in a bag in the garage.

Richard, Dont look him in the eye, run to the light, be careful when he says 'whatcha need tadoo', 'while ya inther'.

BRUISER, last years 3 part magazine article, started out as a repair of leaky rear main seal...ended up being a 850hp 555ci monster with Tranzilla tranny, suspension, and on and on and on.

Seriously, Jim knows more than about this than anyone I have ever known and he is lots of fun. One of the best guys I have ever know.

Here's a picture of Doug's hyd roller/pump gas 555" with A/C, PS, PB etc etc. Just change up a little bling and it can look as stock as Joe's 400"! Oops..I meant 283/270HP!

Haven't been on the board in a while, glad to see you're still at it. Makes a 490 CID BB seem kinda whimpy!

Ps. Great magazine. Right up there with Hemmings Muscle car and Automobile. It's now on my list of gotta haves.

Wasn't this magazine Corvette Enthusiast? Seems all those bitchin about their old subscriptions, jumped the gun. IMHO

Mike, you said it and I have been thinking it (wife made me be quiet). Some were even telling about throwing their subscription in the trash, if upset about change, OK. But, drop the magazine at a vets hospital, VFW, high school shop class...many who will never even ride in a Vette much less own one would like to at least read about it.

Good value for $19/yr

Jim,

As always, great read and very informative...backed by real testing/results. Now if we could only get you to start messing with LS series engines.... You do know they are getting 500+ cubes out of those now too

Jeff, funny you should mention that. Jim (aka TEMPTER) was here a couple of days, we have been talking. More later.
