Default Size 24 Battery isn't anymore?

Went to buy a new battery today (66 coupe, 327 no AC)... Surprise was that they are now about 1/2" wider than they used to be. The extra space is taken up by the molded in attachments for the handle. The attachments interfere with the stock hold down!

What have you guys done? (I do know I can get close with an Optima, but even it has some issues with fit to the stock hold down, and it's twice the price of the others.)

Thanks

Harry

Optima is too small for the stock hold down and will fit poorly unless mods are made or the hold down is changed. I changed the hold down for my Optima.

Just saw the obstructions off with a hacksaw blade.

That's what I do - especially if you want to put one of the fake tops on it to make it look like an original.

Yup- Just got thru doin one - Delco Energizer- Also ground the threads off of the Delco caps that came on the $300 POS tar top that gave up the ghost after only a year and installed them. It actually looks almost undetectable.

Ground mine off with a dremel tool. Only have to take out the center section where the handle strap attaches to clear the tie down bolt. Upper frame will sit on the rest, but will fit down around the battery.

Same here. Cut off strap keepers and the battery retainer covers the damage.

Just a thank you... I cut the tabs off a new NAPA battery. It fit great and the car starts. So I got to take it out for some socially irresponsible behavior!
