I use Chevron 91 octane in my Corvette and 87 octane in my other cars with low compression. 91 is the highest in my area.

When I go the the airport to work on the plane, if I need gas, I take two 5gal cans and have them filled with 100LL Avgas for the 56.
For all other cars (51, 70 Chevelle, Cutlass), I buy 91octane, except the 04 Impala and the 11 Tahoe which use 87octane and they do just fine.
If I'm somewhere in the 56 (and obviously can't get Avgas), then I use 91octane (some places have 93octane).

my new ZZ4 crate engine supposedly has 10:1 cr but is happy on 87. my previous engine was a 70 LT1 with cr of 11:1 and it demanded 93 or better.

I run my 67 L79 on regular. No pinging. I'm sure I could bump the timing and get more, but I like it just this way!

I run the '65 on Shell 93 Octane. It seems to like it the best for some reason?

I run 93 Octane in my 65 L79. 12 degrees initial 36 degrees at about 3 grand. No pinging, bellows through the side exhaust and runs like a scalded dog

I like Shell

Here in Toronto, I run 94 octane in my 427/425 that is available from select Petro-Canada stations.

This blurb is from their website, where you can find the Petro-Canada locations that offer Ultra 94:

Ultra 94
Ontario’s Highest Octane
Ultra 94™ offers the ultimate in performance gasoline. Developed with driving enthusiasts in mind, Ultra 94 has the highest octane of any gasoline in Ontario and is available at select Petro-Canada locations. It’s the fuel of choice for drivers — from the racetrack to the city streets.

Ultra 94, the High Octane Advantage

Ultra 94’s high octane formula surpasses the CGSB (Canadian General Standards Board) performance requirements for super premium gasoline.

What does this mean for your vehicle? Ultra 94’s unique performance and higher detergency helps to:

* Clean your car's fuel injectors and intake valves — and keep them clean
* Optimize fuel economy
* Reduce emissions
* Improve overall vehicle performance year-round

Ultra 94’s higher octane helps ensure you get maximum horsepower, acceleration and performance from your vehicle, even under tough
driving conditions.

Find a Petro-Canada Ultra 94 location.

Default Mid-grade for L68 Big Block

Good question. I buy mid-grade 89 octane for my '67 L68 BB with 10.25:1 and it seems fine, never any pinging. With my L79 with 11:1, I always used premium 91/93 octane because of the higher compression ratio. I try to buy non-ethanol/non-oxiginated mid-grade for the car, always suspect of ethanol added fuels, especially for storage.

For carbureated motorycles and outdoor power equipment, for sure I use non-ethanol added fuel and always mix in a fuel preservative i.e. Sta-bil through out the year.

Oh ya, I forgot to mention, when I run the Avgas in the 56, most of the main reason is just so I can smell the exhaust------------it smells soooooooooo good!

No, quite the opposite. You want to use the lowest octane possible without inducing detonation. Higher octane than that is just wasted money.

You are right Mike--- Except for one other very important factor- I have a very good friend who works for a major refinery that rhymes with Mobil/Exxon. He said that their switches on the grades are made in the line on the low grade (89) right at the set point- it may have jet fuel in front of it, and it may have naptha or kerosene, whereas on the high grade stuff the cut is made 10 barrels before sending the premium grade down the line, and the end cut is made 10 barrels after premium is sent, so it is 100% premium. Plus the premium grade is monitored much closer for cleanliness. I like to run premium just to stay away from contamination probs. Maybe not all manufacturers do that.... don't know.

Thanks, I'll add that one to the list of shrouded secret mysteries of what goes on in refineries. Just call me a cynic.
