Default Matching Numbers or Not?

It's been about 15 yrs since I sold my 67 roadster L79. Now, after many cars I would like to get back into a midyear. Unfortunatley the prices are out of sight.

Questions:
will a matching numbers car and non matching numbers car appreciate at the same rate? (percentage)

What should the non matching numbers car "discount" be. ie: fixure on x% less for a non matching but otherwise identical car.

Anything to stay away from?

Can I get something reasonable for $30K? I have no problem rolling up my sleeves and working on it.

It would be hard to assign a set percentage difference between a matching and non matching car. On say an L79, 20% would probably be a decent ballpark figure but that would probably be different on a L88 ( probably higher) or a L75 ( probably lower). Also would depend on what matching numbers mean. Some folks refer to matching numbers as the engine matching, others the entire drivetrain, others, everything matching ( alternator, carb, starter, radiator, etc). I would think that both cars would appreciate at about the same percent but that too would depend on the economy, current demand on a certain model etc. Your other question about finding one for about 30K, that would be possible for a less than decent driver if you like to do all your own work.

Good luck on finding anything decent for $30,000. I looked for about a year to find a "driver". Typical story, if the price was right it needed too much work. If it was about what I wanted it was priced too high.
I finally found a nice '64 roadster for $35,000 with a non-original rebuilt 327, but I did get the original motor with it. It still needs paint, although it's passable. Interior is pretty good but could use new carpet. A '64 wasn't my first choice, but for the money I wanted to spend it works. Looking was fun but after awhile it gets old.

There is a decent 64 here in Portland on Craigslist for $35k.

I drove it....its decent.

Not original motor, but a pretty solid driver.

Ive seen 63-64s offered in the low 30s, but 65-67 still hold their value in the 40k range.

Just surf craigslist in all the big cities...something will turn up. Besides Portland, California had the most postings.

Good Luck!

I don't believe you need to "stay away" from any midyear in particular. Condition is the main criteria. Don't know you're location but here is a decent looking 65 in your ballpark.

Have you looked at that 65? It's interesting to me if the frame has not been cobbled together. What does it look like? How original is it?

What does it need?

Myron,

All I know about this car is what you see on craigslist. It's located about 60 miles North of Detroit. Call the seller, ask him about the car, and if you're still interested, have him send detailed photos of the areas you want to see and take it from there.

if you are buying a car thinking that it will appreciate, forget it... buy it because it is what you want and can afford.

Well even though I don't always follow my own advice, I think you should buy the best car you can afford.

Those cheap fixer-uppers usually wind up costing two-three times what you thought it would cost to fix it, not including all the hassles and down time. A good car will always retain some of it's value.

Where do you live? There are some decent project cars showing up in the 30k area. People want more.......but CASH is talking right now. COUPES are less than convertibles, but I think a lot nicer to drive.
