Using an OLD license plate on your car????

Old plates can be used but actual registered plate must be carried in your car and shown if needed. (Traffic violation...red light etc). Odd way to be able to use old plates in North Carolina but I have been stopped and had no issues. I was pulled so that officer could look at my car. 59 navy
