F70-15 in the old days translates into 205 70R 15 in today's metric radial tire size.
Sorry, I know that doesn't answer your question.

not sure if it is the same, but when I dropped the carrier on my '68, it had that size tire inside mounted on 7" ralley rim, not fully inflated - but had air and firm.

I was going to go with 5 Pirelli P4000 Super Touring tires in 215x70x15 size, but the Firestone Firehawk PV41 tire in 225x70x15 is suppose to be about the best handling tire out there, it's also used as a police pursuit tire. I would get 5 of these if I can carry it in the spare well, inflated.

Mine came from the factory with G-70s, or the same as 225/70s....
I would think it should fit in a '70-'72 carrier too.....

Why not just get 4 new tires that you drive on, and get a smaller size that will fit in the "tub" for a spare?After-all,how many times do you really use a spare today?Just my 2c

That's the size my 79 has under it. I think the carrier didnt' change in those years. It does hang down a little lower with the bigger tire in there. Mine is supposed to have a donut spare.

I had a 245-60r 15 in my bucket for my 69. Had to let the front bolts down a bit but had no problems.

Thanks everyone, the information helps.
I wouldn't want to be stranded somewhere and not be able to change the tire without an identical spare to use.
In the old days, I use to run 265x50x15 Euro T/A's on all four wheels and just not carry any spare in the carrier. However with these cars approaching huge values, I wouldn't want to take a chance of just leaving the car stranded somewhere because of a tire failure.

Go no larger than 245. When that part is completed then start on the tub. There are two bolts towards the front of the carrier and of course one in the back. The two bolts towards the front are adjustable......adjust em' to the proper depth for the tire. On each of the two bolts is a locking nut to tighten once adjusted. Put tire in carrier, lift and tighen bolt in rear.
