Any help would be appreciated. ok here is the story . Just bought a 1980 ( L82 - 88K - auto ) would not idle or stay running . Previous owner said car was running bad , had the carb. rebuilt , never could get to run good , sat in his driveway for 2 years. So I brought it home tryed to adjust idle have to set at about 1200 rpm to stay running, and idle mixture screws would have no affect( at lower idle car will not stay running ). So long story short I rebuilt carb. with new kit. found 2 small seals missing that go to the choke housing (elect choke maybe only need the inner one ? ). was not sure if the factory metering screw had been adjusted so tuned it in 2 turns to seat. When I reassembled carb. I set the factory meteing screw at 3 1/2 turns out , per the haynes book. Adjusted float and accelerator pump height , and all linkages as per rebuild kit ,epoxyed the plugs . The car will idle at 800 to 900 rpm now in park 600 rpm in drive ,the idle mixture screws do have an affect now maybe not as much as they should .(dose not seem like they do much ) . Checked timming 12 degrees at idle with vacuum advance unhooked and pluged. New plugs ,wires , rotor and cap ,new gas. Car runs great down the road but off idle it wants to stall. have to feather the gas to take off. It seems to get a good shot of gas from accelerator pump. Sorry for the long post. What else should I check ,what do you think I'm missing. will not be able to check back till tomarro night. THANKS I forgot to say the primary valve shalf has a small amount of play

the car sat for two years because there was something wrong with the carb that the owner could not fix .i would start with a carb that i know works .

Did you change out or check the size of the idle tubes during your rebuild? They may be sized incorrectly or have a blockage of some sort?
How much vac are you pulling at idle...possible you have a leak you haven't detected yet, maybe not in the carb itself but in a peripheral connection or seal (eg: trans/cruise/booster tree in intake behind carb)? You mention the valve shaft has some play...I'm assuming your talking about the butterflies in the base. It could lead to a vac leak if the bushings are worn.

"In addition, I noticed that the front edge of the carburetor to intake manifold gasket is wet with gas."
Thought for you and in Chris's book, the base of qjets sometimes gets warped from overtightening. Or maybe just needs a new gasket. Read the book and you can check with a straightedge and agree, do not want an engine fire, particularly after you know what the C3 "firewall" looks like and consists of, Ha! more burnable fiberglass!
