Removable rear windows

removable windows
You know you can put that removable window in a 73-77 also. All you need is the hardware from a 72 on back. I put one in my 77 and love it. The window stays out most of the time and the t-tops stay in more now but ona good day with the window out and the t-tops out,,,,you are really living.

I found a write-up on it here. Once you start doing it, you see how straight-forward it is. I found the hardest part to be gluing in the seal.
I didn't install a storage tray in mine, but that doesn't look difficult either. Finding the parts for that would likely be the biggest challenge.

If you have a 73-77, you should do this mod to your car! You will wonder how you lived without it! The rear window is almost never in place on my car.

I believe the removable window may be one of the most overlooked desirable features of the 68-72 cars. I took mine out I don't know how many years ago and it hasn't been back in since. Yep, even when I wash the car it's still out. A little car with the water hose and all I get is a few drops on the seats. Only washing the car with water once, maybe twice a year helps out too. I suppose the funny thing is I can't remember the last time I drove my car with the tops out.

In my 77 I took the back window out and never put it in until I sold it then I just set it back in the channel and let the trim hold it in, I just let the new owner worry about what to do with it.

I removed all the parts including the window out of a wrecked Corvette YEARS ago to install in my 76... Cost me all of 50 bucks at Carlisle including the interior roof panels..
Only difficulty part was installing the 2 latches. at the top of the window....
GM left the holes in place in the roofs structural brace but did not continue to weld the nut inside the brace so you could bolt the latch in place.. .I honestly can not remember how I managed to bolt them in place..
I run Moon roofs on my 76..and they have NOT came off in years yet the rear window is out 90 percent of the time..
I DID NOT have to drill any holes..they were still there in my 76
so drilling if it has to be done should only be needed in a 77 I guess

Hi,
You need to be careful when buying the used glass.
Many, many, that I see for sale at Carlisle have sanding scratches along the bottom edge from an orbital sander. The soft aluminium frame has often been scratched too.
On a nice car the scratches are pretty noticeable.
Regards,
Alan
