Default 68 Corvette Coupe Rear Window Storage Tray

I have a correct rear window storage tray for my coupe, and I found the correct hinges for it on ebay, too. My question is, were there any kind of torsion springs on the hinge pivots, to maintain tension against the "Window Storage" handle/clip to keep the tray from flopping or maybe dislodging? Thanks!

Default Hi

The trays that I have, have a spring loaded hinge on them. There is a latch at the front under the window that sort of clips the tray in place. Not sure what yours looks like. Consider posting a picture. I probably have an original tray for a 68 if you need one. Getting hard to find though.

Default Oh,

There were also black rubber foam blocks posted near the front edge of the tray just under the rear window. Kinda on the underside of the rear deck. One located on each side. Just like the one's shown in that other post.

Hi Here's a pic of the tray and one of the hinges. The hinge has a nut on it. The tray itself is 42 3/4" wide, and a hair over 20" deep.

Default Hi again

There are a few parts missing. There is a two piece lever arm that goes between the bracket and the rear window shelf. The arms are spring loaded.

Your tray is nice looking. There are only slight difference between the 68 and 69 tray. Im not sure if it is myth or reality. Not sure when the cut off is. It has to do with the metal strip on the leading edge of the tray.

Here is the top side of it. Neither one of the latches is spring loaded (anymore), if that is what you are referring to.

One more thing - I just read in another previous thread that this may not be a correct tray because of the polished edge?

Default Hi again

Um, but I believe it is physically identical otherwise. The leading edge is thought to be shinny like yours in 1969. 68 was thought to be dull natural steel. But, you need to ask around and I am not sure if this is myth or reality. You also have to ask yourself when the transition occurred. Also possible that both versions were installed at the same time. You can go nutz. But, you need the spring arms.

I might have what you need but it is the whole enchilada.

Thank you for your insights on this. What do you mean by "spring arms"? Could you please post a pic?

Just found a tray on ebay, that had hinges with springs, and that the seller claims is for a 68-69. The body side hinge bracket is different than what I have or have seen on ebay.

Wow, they have gone up in price. A lot of care has to go into shipping them. You can easily break the hinges off if they get bumped on the corner. Let me know if you want me to go digging in my attic? ; ) I am sure I have one up there. Heee he

Three and a half years after creating this thread, I'm still at it. I hope you all don't mind if I reopen this thread. This time I mean it, I am actually getting close to being done with this car.

As I said back then, I have the tray (ok, it may be a 69 with the shiny edge and all). I have the hinge part (with welded nut) that I assume screws into the rear vertical wall of the storage area behind the seats. I don't have the torsion spring, and I don't have what appears to be a flat bar connecting this one hinge piece to the one rivetted to the tray itself.

How hard do you think the spring and this connecting bar would be to fabricate? Could you suggest any sources for the springs? What is the length, width, and gauge of the connecting bar? These two parts I put arrows next to in this picture.

Why not post a "wanted to buy" ad on this Forum for the actual pieces that you need? You might be surprised how readily available they might be if you 'ask'.
(a lot quicker than 3-1/2 years, I think...) lol

I have so many excuses but so few reasons for how long this has taken me

And that's a great idea, I will do that wanted post. I also started an ebay recurring search last night.

And if you're curious, here she is, 427/435 L71. Dash finally installed today, all lights working, etc. Tomorrow I have to replace the driver door lock mechanism - the U-channel that the inside door handle slides into partially sheared off last week after years of apparent stress. And yes, that's an modern look-alike radio. I have the original, as well as all of the SMOG gear (project for another day).

The 68 rear window storage tray is a one year only animal....sound familiar. It looks like you have the 69 tray. The 68 storage tray is all one piece with the hinges riveted on with their built in springs. The 69-70 fiber board storage tray has the seperately mounted metal hinges that you show. 71-72 trays are fiberglass and are shorter front to back. GM brought the back wall in over four inches closer to the front of the car. The 69 tray is suppose to be about an inch too short to latch on the 68 latch with those seperate hinges. Lou.
