This recreation white ZL1 on ebay is now at $151k. Just plain crazy. Someone is bidding that really thinks it's a factory built ZL1.

Are you sure it’s a recreation?

Yes. Have you been reading the posts? Read post 29 and look at the tank sticker. A ZL1 can not be ordered with a radio option. If the tank sticker he claims came with the car, did in fact come with the car, then that pretty much proves it right there along with the fact that it does not show the “Aluminum case” option anywhere on the tank sticker. No J56 option shown which was required on all L88/ZL1 unless you use the COPO option to request that option not be included such as the one and only documented L88 did (reason was the tracks to be raced on made the J56 not as effective). As you can see on this tank sticker no COPO code was used so it must have the J56.

Its a transplant car. Even though the seller was on Facebook suggesting it may be a factory ZL1 car, it’s not. Besides the assembly stamp looks pretty sketchy and of course no vin stamp.

I am very surprised it went that high. Maybe a shill bidder for the seller.

It is 100% not an original factory built ZL1. In addition to what Ed mentioned, the hood is an aftermarket L88 hood and the car has standard suspension with an incorrect 9 leaf spring. The auction still has 3 days left, so who knows what it will sell for. It already has higher bids than the blue recreation ZL1 convertible form Florida that sold at mecum:https://www.mecum.com/lots/454524/] https://www.mecum.com/lots/454524/[/url]

On the sticker, rather than TURBOJET 427 V8 should it say SPECIAL TURBOJET 427 V8?

Whats at the bottom?

Looks like before TURBO-JET I see an HP which would not be SPECIAL then.

You guys are good. So this is an L71 modified to a ZL1?

Comparing to the HP here:

It is an L71 modified into a ZL1. If it was a ZL1 the engine option would have been an L88 with the aluminum cylinder block option on the bottom section of the tanks sticker. If it was originally an L89 it would the aluminum cyl heads as an option towards the bottom which it clearly doesn't. Therefore it had to leave the factory as an L71. Here is the tank sticker to the real yellow ZL1 coupe:

Crazy.

Fools and their money.

I wonder if it was recreated as a white ZL1 to mimic the former Otis Chandler ZL1 car which was in magazines 25-30 years ago?

You mean if I mimic my '69 Corvette to look just like an original ZL1 (which is easy for anyone to do), I could easily get $150,000+ for it? Excuse me while I start the paint sprayer.......

That engine is likely $50k, maybe more, right?

No hit ‘69 which was born with L71, but without engine, maybe $30k?

How available are ZL-1 engines or how much would it cost to build one?

Possible. At least the Chandler car was presumed to be born as an L-88. I don’t know enough about this L71 conversion, but if there is any documentation to show that it was some form of a dealer transplant when close to new then I could see it hitting that kind of value. It has that old patina look to it but of course that shouldn’t be enough to get it up there. Maybe there is more to it, who knows.

IFITGOES:
As to the availability of the ZL1 engines, they are not easy to find and getting more expensive by the minute. Last year I saw 2 on eBay, complete, one finished for 30k and another for 25k needing assembly. Now there’s a block on Facebook for 25ish I think.

Thats what’s so interesting. It’s not even like it was a good mimic. Lots of wrong parts but just had the right look.
