Default Loose Steering on a 1977 coupe.

Hey there gang. Just got my 1977 coupe out of storage for the winter last week and took it for a good, long drive

Here is something I noticed though, the steering was pretty loose. By that I mean, I would turn it a good distance to the left and right before the wheels actually started turning. This was rather inconvenient last summer, but seems to have maybe grown a bit worse. As you can imagine, turning the steering slightly to the left and right constantly just to keep the car straight is rather annoying lol.

Now, I am not a mechanic in the least, so I was wondering if anyone had any idea about how I can fix this? I am hoping it is something simple that can just be tightened lol.

However, as for the good news; the brakes held consistently, the throttle response was smooth and exact, and it sounded just as good as ever

could be worn rag joint, too much play in steering box, worn tie rod ends, idler arm, etc. Too many possiblilites has to be checked.

True. To troubleshoot, try looking at each joint one by one as a helper wiggles the wheel. I ended up putting a rebuilt steering box, repairing the rag joint and a new power steering pump.

Here is an awesome link to help with your work
