Default O.K., What's wrong with Fram oil filters?

I've used these almost exclusively on all my cars since I began driving.
Now I read they don't measure up to AC Delco's? Please enlighten me. :skep:

Well, I know TWO people (separate parties) personally that had their engine destroyed do to Fram filters. What happened was the paper at the bottom of the filter separated and clogged the oil pump and destroyed both engines. They contaced Fram and sent the oil filter and oil. In both cases Fram issued them a checks for a complete new engine and paid for labor with in a week.

This tells me that this is NOT an isolated incident to pay compenstaion in such a short time frame.

ALL I use is AC Delco and WIX filters.

i have recently seen information regarding this. there was a link in a thread a while back to a site where someone had cut open and compared about 20 different types of filters. the fram had the worst construction design and assembly of all of them.
as soon as i do my oil change, maybe today, i'll be cutting that fram apart to verify the guy's claims.

There was a website made by a guy who bought all different brands of filters and cut them open. I think he got shut down after different companies threatened legal action.

I use Wix, Purolator, or AC Delco. (BTW: Purolator makes the Motorcraft filter I use in my F150. It has a silicone valve.)

The best I've seen, when cut open is the NAPA Gold much better construction, and many more pleats of filter material than the others, and less expensive too. I don't know who actually makes the filter that they put their name on, but that is what I intend to use from now on. :yesnod:

Cookin1979, are you over 40 like me, I ask because, I was a Fram user since the 70's, they were the best then, I have found out from forums like this, that when Fram was bought by Allied, there quality control went downhill, I now use ACDelco & K/N

Actually Fram doesnt measure up to just about anybody.

Cheap cheap materials
>too little filtration material
>cardboard endplates with filter material glued to it
>cheap - poorly designed bypass valve that stays open most of the time if it doenst fall off.

Well, if it can destroy my engine I think I'll use Fram on my Crown Vic... a rebuild couldn't hurt, could it? Maybe I could stick a lightening 351W in instead of the lo-po 302...

Fram is all I ever used back in the 70's and 80's, and I had no problems. Luckly I've been using AC Delco filters on the vette. Glad you guys decided to post this.

I'm not usually a follower ;) but you guys have convinced me...I'm pulling the Fram off ASAP and will use a NAPA Gold. Does anybody know if using synthetic oil makes a difference? Are there filters for synthetic oil? I've never noticed..? :flag

This is so, funny, I also usually uese Fram filters, I changed both my and my wifes oil today, went into the local jobber, and he was out of the Fram filters for both applications, so I bought Purolators, i guess I am glad they were out.
