The best radar detector is the Valentine 1. See any Car and Driver detector test, they have always had fair tests. The V1 has the highest sensitivity, tells you how many radar sources it is receiving and can tell you if the source is from the front, side , or rear. New they are $400 and units returned before 30 day trial are less and have the same guarantee. See http://www.valentine1.com

as a truck driver for the last 11 yrs, i have tried alot of radar detectors and GOT tickets.I have never tried valentine because of $$$, but will have to vouch for BEL.I have had mine for 5 yrs and NO tickets...i believe it is a model 850, maybe.Because of the price of insurance and tickets(not to mention walking) you will be better off spending the $$$ on the front side for great detector.I also run a radar jammer that i bought for around $200 for the vette.when shot by radar it will read 15mph or 355mph on the officers gun(proven, lol) but must be facing the radar gun........another idea ,kind of tacky on a car, but you can also use an offshore depth finder(i use this on my tractor trailer)sounds fishy huh  ,but it works.gives you a blocking field of 200' little overkill for a car but hey so are tickets...Jay

V1...hands down is the "best"....but it IS "pricy". But you're better off spending the money up front and getting a detector you can depend on rather than settling for a "bargan"...eh?

I have used a few over the years and was always concerned about what was behind. Most have only a forward facing window and rely on a bounce. This will leave you too close to the highway bandit in uniform to be safe. I now use the V1 and I am very please with the unit. The rear-facing sensor saved me a ticket by an Alabama trooper that followed me for over 100 miles from behind.

I have heard from a friend that the Escort 8500 is better than the V1. It goes for about $300 and is Escorts brand new modle.

A marine depth sounder transmits ultrasonic (acoustic pulses at a frequency higher than humans can hear) signals and then listens for the return echos in water. A depth sounder pointed at a police radar (radio frequencies) or laser (light beam) cannot do anything to either speed measuring device because it isn't generating any energy in the radio or light spectrum.

alot of them dont turn the radar on until they have you in sight, so they already have what they need when your warning goes off. no matter what you buy it wont help in that situation...

Cool I was wondering the same thing, was tryin to decide over the V1 or the escort 8500. One ticket and the detector will pay for itself so I think it'll be worth it in the long run to get the V1.

V1. That is all there is.

Sure. There are others... but that damned radartest.com site will bash it all day long... and you know why?? the idiot that runs the site is an independant consultant. He has worked for all except Valentine - because he won't hire'm!!!

I have never seen a published article that states the V1 is second to anything. Unless it has something to do with that stupid site...

oh, I have owned one for the last 3 years. It is the best. And so are they. Sure, you pay alot, but they take good care of you! I had an issue with mine - falsing on made up K band. I sent it in, they fix, and did'nt charge!!!!!!!

These guys and gals rule!!!!

Any high quaility radar detector will serve you well. The V1 is a good detector, but not worth the difference in dollars. We are talking feet in detector sensitivity, not miles, and not enough to get you out of a ticket. Most high end detectors can detect both from the rear and front. And as for multiple threats, seems more like a gimick then something that happens in the real world. Multiple cops shooting radar would confuse each radar gun if not done right.

Besides, the best dectector in the world is your eyes. Know when you can and when you can't drive fast and you'll be safe.

I have picked up Kband at 2 miles away with my Valentine. The directional arrows and "Boggie" counter are also nice to have to give you more information about what is going on.

Of course instant on will render any detector useless...

Yes it's true that you cannot stop a instant on radar shot however a detector that has the longest range will help to pick up residual radar from the guy that gets shot up ahead of you even if the copper only gives a short blast. so pay attention to all warnings on the highway. the best way to really avoid is to pay attention most cop's are not as trickey as I was when I was a cop and just sit in a median or up against a underpass structure. here's a little heads up on my old tricks that I know a few Illinois and Ohio troopers still use. 1. look on top of any overpass for some outline of a figure. I would park on opposite side of bridge and carry my hand held unit (Laser or radar) squat down and get readings from inbetween the rail. Sorry to anyone I got like that I know it's pretty crappy. also I'd park on top of on ramp and shoot down at you from behind really hard for any detector to give any real advance warning since im shooting it the same direction as you are traveling and there is usually a large structure around to help break up the signal if any bounces back. also If you are getting followed or are following a cop and he gets off the highway check in your mirror that he doesn't get right back on we know who the speeders are we see you come up behind us at 90 and slow down when you see us so we also know that when you think we are gone you are back to 90. I get on, pace you from even up to1/2 mile back and you are now the proud owner of a $100+ citation. and as I said in one of my previous threads watch all cars with heavy tint on the windows many dept's. are using non traditional unmarkeds to catch the highway speeder, here in Indiana we have camaro's, grand prix's, taurus's and intrepids all colors except white or black and no numerous antennas. I just want all of you to be able to keep on driving that Vette the way it was supposed to be driven. HARD! :yesnod:

No question V1, the $100 difference in price is less than 1 ticket. The boogie counter and directional indication give you a chance against a tag team of guns.

Watch out for the K-band in Pacific Grove.

Remember at triple digits you only have 2-3 seconds to read the detector and get on the brakes to get below a passable speed.
