Remove gear shift ****
Ok, I need some help. How do you get the gear shift **** off the ZF equipped cars? I pryed off the cover, but can not get the retainer out. Is there a trick?

Yes, there's a pin in there that has to come out first before you unscrew the ****. Someone'll find the pic for it, or I may first.

Removing the stock **** is actually straight-forward.. Pry up the plastic button that has the shift pattern embossed on it. Use a small screw driver or thin knife blade and pry from the rear. Once that is removed, you'll see a rectangular steel 'key' sitting in the now-exposed space. This comes straight up, out of the ****. At this point the **** just unscrews from the shift lever. The problem arises when that key won't come out. With a small hammer and a drift pin(punch) tap the key DOWN just until it moves slightly. Then, using a small Vise-Grip pliers (preferably a new one, with nice sharp teeth on the jaws), grab the key FIRMLY. Now, with the aforementioned hammer, tap UPWARDS on the Vise-Grips. The key WILL come out, just keep tapping. The factory forces them in very tightly, as you will see by the scoring marks on the key once it is out.

Thanks. I love the way the factory service manual just states "remove the retainer".
Whom ever put the retainer in previously must of really hammered it in. I just about cracked my jaw when the pliers slipped off.
In mean time, I figured out that since I was replacing the console, I didn't have to take the boot off the gear shift. I could just take the four screws out and slip the console off.

Another way is to buy a drum brake adjuster tool. (Should be relatively inexpensive). It looks like a small, straight-blade screwdriver with two bends in it (similar to the worlds smallest prybar).
Use it as a prybar to lift (pry) the pin from the hole. No hammering required.

Think of it this way, when you hammer a nail, is it easier to hit it, or press down on the nail?
The same principle applies here, much easier to tap it out then to try and yank it out.
