Default Found a beat up ZR1

Edit 1/2/2020 I BOUGHT IT. Scroll down for pics.

Original message:
Going to look at a 1990 ZR1 today. 60,000miles. It’s a beater. The guy bought it from the original owner and it was trashed and not running. He spent some money and freshened up the engine. Apparently runs and drives well now, except needs a brake job. Also needs paint and interior work. He’s selling because he bought a C3 that he wants to spend his time and money on.
what should I check for, anything to watch out for? I’ve owned a 1995 LT1 C4, my dad had a 1996 LT4, and my bro had a 1984 vette. So I’m familiar with the C4 generation, just not LT5s. Any help would be appreciated!!!
thanks!

Like most old cars check your balance of cash and available credit. just an overall inspection all the safety stuff. Do all the features work. Jumping aldl see if and what codes.Brakes pads or more than that? If drivable noises, clutch and shifting operations.

Interiors are cheap and easy. I would buy a cheap zr1 that was mechanically sorted but ugly for sure.

All things considered, an LT5 is not. . . . . never mind...

The 80-92 LT5 injectors were susceptible to ethanol fuels, and so the injectors need to be replaced.
By removing the panels and prepping/priming them and then having the car color painted, I got it painted for less than $5k. The seats can be recovered and carpet bought with you installing it for well under $2k. And, a ZR-1(LT5) w/ only 60k miles is barely broken in as long as it was never run out of coolant or oil or such!.

My 1990 ZR-1: New interior and paint. (The "FBI" 500 HP package was "a little" extra tho...)

Yeah roughly the same. Price a starter motor, or water pump replacement. Let us know.

Jerry's has one for 295.00. Not too bad considering...

Rockauto has reman starters for 140, and new water pumps for 200-300. They're a bit more than lt1 part costs, but that's to be expected.

I would not call interior parts cheap.

Having restored almost an entire interior this past summer, I can attest to this.

when I wanted to freshen up the interior of my 94 when I owned it the cost of the interior was going to be just about the book value of the car itself.

Were you paying someone to do it? My seat skins were 300ish, and custom with alcantara inserts. Carpet the whole car is 400 to 500. The leather dashboard skin I've been looking at is like 250. The plastics and stuff I guess could add up, but who needs to replace all of that?

Labor will get you on anything. I like to do my own work though, so that mostly nullifies that cost for me.

Yep. Pretty much. That stuff's way, way overpriced.

I did mine myself. It all adds up. I'm still not really finished, I have a couple little odds and ends left to do but all in all it really does run darned near book value of the car itself.

It looks nice, though. And satisfies my OCD. So, that's the payoff. I hate a beat up, ugly interior.
