Default 1990 Iroc 700r4 tranny fit 1996 corvette lt1?

Hey again.

I posted this 700r4 (I think it's an electronic version from what I remember the shop telling me who rebuilt it) from my old 90 l98 iroc on the c4 for sale section knowing of course that the transmissions were similar, but not the same as in the vette. Perhaps I should move it to another forum section but I wasn't thinking.

Now, this got me thinking. Will that transmission work in my 1996 corvette if I trade out the tailshaft or are there insurmountable differences. Reason I ask is that I know that transmission shifts very hard and the one in the vette has 70k miles on it and is starting to show signs of weakening.

If it won't work for me and my 96, are there any years that it will fit for the vette? Maybe 1990/91 since those motors were more similar to the iroc?

As you may know, I am going to be putting the lt4 engine in behind my original lt1 a4. But these 2 transmissions are not side by side right now, so I don't know if there are other differences. I'm sure the lt4 is going to bring my aging 70k tranny to its knees in no time.

thanks for the information in advance!

Pre 93's use electronics for the speedo and lock up. Later units are referred to as 4l60e. They are fully electronic. A non electronic unit (like your for sale unit) will not work in your 96.

Yes tail shaft & governor(recommended) at least .Some will say you need to cut the splineshaft some say no.Valve body if you want it to shift like your vette.I believe you could put it in a 96 too.You would need this

to replace the electronic shift.I do not think the speedo is an issue if you swap it out could be wrong though.

Where do you plan on bolting up your trans to diff C-beam since your Vette doesn't have a trans crossmember and the F-car does?

When you change out the tail end to the Vette style, you can use the C beam.

When I bought the Corvette initiallly, it was hit in the front end.. turns out it had also broken the tail shaft from the impact.... I think I paid about 100 for a new one that I put back on myself. I think I had to have a bushing and or seal pressed in or may have done it myself. I can't remember. I'm pretty sure, that that part wouldn't be problem.
Does anyone know if it would cause codes to come up on the 96?
I'm thinking that I may be able to use the lt4 computer in my lt4 swap...and use this 700r4 trannny....This is getting ugly.

You cannot use a non electronic trans in an electronic trans car.

As Pete K said.

It will fit , the C beam will bolt up if you use the Vette ext housing ,but it will not be electronically controlled by the '96 computer.
As stated you could hook up the TV cable as in the earlier non elec setup but I do not know if the computer gets any feedback from the trans other than VSS which is the same on both types.
