Default Battery, Starter, or Altenator?

My 1990 L98 is starting to get finnicky when I try to start the engine. It seems that if the engine is good and cool she will start up fine but if i stop, say, to get gas and then try to start her up again she won't start. If I turn the key to the on position the power in the car works it just won't start. I have had to push her off four times today and it's starting to get annoying and embarassing to have such an awesome car but i have to push it off to start it.

What do you mean by, "it won't start"? Do you mean that the starter motor does not crank the engine, or do you mean that the starter cranks, but the engine won't catch and run?

we need a little more information. But if you're saying it won't crank...next time take an object, jack handle or a pipe and rap the starter...if that cures the problem..well you know it's the starter.

Reading between the lines it sounds like you're saying it's not cranking over when hot. This is usually a bad starter solenoid. It can also be a bad battery cable connection, but less likely.

The starter solenoid is part of the starter assembly, the whole thing would be replaced. About $120.

It could also be VATS or the clutch (gear selector switch if auto) safety switch. Use the search function, there are a gazillion posts about how to find and fix that problem.

Do you hear a loud click when turning the key or just nothing at all?

When I turn the key there is nothing, no click no hum just silence. I'll try tapping on the starter if it hapens again today. Usually it only hapens when I don't let it cool down for more than a few hours.

Removal of the starter is easy.....its the shiny tin torque converter cover with those two inaccessible screws that are a pain .....

So what are some good brands to look for when I buy a new one? I will probably do it this weekend.
