Best way to clean tranny case?
I've got the ZF out and it looks like it has 90K miles on it. I'd like to get it nice and clean before I put it in. It seems to be pitted quite a bit. What have you all done to clean these up?

Once all the dirt is off with the methods above, get some nice Eagle One Etching Mag Wheel Cleaner. Works wonders on aluminum. Spray it on, scrub it a little with a wire brush and wash it off.

Dave,
I'd think you could just pre-clean it with "whatever" to remove the grease/grime etc. After that I'd consider maybe an aluminum wheel cleaner or "brightener" meant for unpolished aluminum. I've done cases before like this "many years ago"!
Bag the "electronics", the input shaft, output shaft, and the shifter!!
Looks like someone (80'srule) hit "the button" while I was in thought!

When I did my rear gear change I used Aluminum Brightener on all the rear suspension parts. I got it by the gallon from NAPA. It'll make unpolished aluminum look like new with just a rise from a garden hose. It's an acid so don't use it on anything shinny.
