How do you remove the shift **** from an automatic????????? without tearing it up.
With some flat bladed screw drivers, pry up and remove the plastic shift button.
Look down inside and you will see an O ring that holds on the ****
Lots of parts places sell cheap O ring removal/install pliers to get this part out.
Once the O ring is out, the **** will slide up and off.
I have also done it with a screw driver to pry apart the tabs on the O ring!
Pliers are easier and potentially less damaging

Do it just like "jack" said to do it. However, my 89 has a metal snap ring that holds the shifter **** to the shifter shaft. This ring is a bit pesky to remove. After removal of the ring, the know just slips right off!
