Default Do I have to remove the dash pad to remove the instrument cluster on an 87?

I have new Xenon bulbs to put in my instrument cluster (and they don't use the same socket as the old bulbs, so my "cheat" of pulling the old bulbs out and inserting new ones, won't work with the Xenon bulbs).
I saw one video that involved removing the entire dash pad in order to get the instrument cluster disconnected and out. Is there another way that doesn't involve removing the dash pad? Or, do I just need to buck up and do it?

If you loosen the screws in the windshield defrost vent (2 of them) it will give you enough flexibility to be able to remove the instrument cluster

those 2 screws removed will not free up the dash pad. There are other screws to take out too

No you do not need to do that, I have removed the cluster on both my 86 and 88 several times without removing the dash pad.

It takes some wiggling, but no you do not take the dash pad out for just that job.

As Vader says, you don't need to touch the dashpad. Remove the console top plate (or just pull it back a bit), then the center panel, then lower the tilt all the way and remove the lever. Make sure you get all the screws and wiggle it out. Bare minimum torque when reinstalling or you'll crack the plastic.

Lemans, I didn’t say it would free up the dash pad, what I did say was “you can get a little wiggle room”. If you’re going to rebut what I say make sure your facts are correct, please

I should have said it comes out easier if it's off

Same thing here with my 84. Cluster has been out many times. Dash pad stays in.

It can be done with the dash pad in place. I have removed and replaced the cluster in my ‘89. Without removing or loosening the pad.
