Default Shift **** Removal?

OK, feeling a little dumb here. I am trying to remove the shift **** ('84, auto trans), but do not see an obvious way to do this. No mention of it in the shop manual (probably because it IS obvious and I'm just not getting it). I do not want to damage the **** or the button (I've tried to gently pry the button with a screwdriver, but it is not giving). Any tips would be appreciated.

Bill

 On my 88, I think they are the same, you use a thin, small screwdriver to pry the button up and out.

In the hole you will see a C clamp, takes special pliers to remove.

With this out, the **** will come right off,,,,I think :D

:iagree:
I think Jack means by "c-clamp" ... a snap ring. You will need snap ring plyers to remove it....otherwise you will fight it. The **** will then lift off the shifter.

Thanks for the help everyone. Aftyer leaving that post, I also did a search of other posts on this subject (should have done this first). Anyway, I was able to get the **** off--the shift button was on there pretty tight and I was afraid I would snap something. All is well.

Thanks again!

When I replaced mine on my 88, the **** was still on tight even after removing the c-clip. I had to really pry to get it off. When it came off it shot like a cork in a wine bottle. :) I assume it had never been off before so corrosion made it tight.

Can you tell my red carpet is disintegrating? :)
