Default 100 Low Lead AVGas - Can I run it?

100 octane for $3.95 a gallon at the local airpark. Can I run it, or will the low lead (or some other property of AVGas) do damage?

Go ahead, burst my bubble and tell me why I can't. I'm paying $5.99 a gallon for 101 unleaded.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but NO LEAD AT ALL with cats.

Thanks,

What about those with no cats? I'm sure there are quite a few of us.

AV gas was desined to burn in an airplane engine running at a set rpm and high altitude. Dont use it.

Do you run the 101 straight, or mix it. I run 2 quart cans of Torco per tank. This takes me up to about 97 octane when mixed with 91. Torco comes out cheaper and is more convenient then running 101, and comes in an unleaded Formula.

I use to run AV gas all the time. The stuff runs great. It's very high quality high octane gasoline. It won't go below 100 octane after sitting for a while. But I would not run it with cats, or on a motor with oxygen sensors. But for a high compression carb motor, it's great. I think there is a unleaded version now. The differnce between AV gas, and Race gas, is race gas will have other additives in it.

JB - I run 25% 101 pump, 75% 91 pump, so that gives me an effective octance rating of 96 I think. I also have a couple of bottles of octance boost in the trunk in case I get caught away from a race gas location. When I go through them I'll be contacting you, I know you're a Torco distributor, have check you prices and read everyone's testimonies.

Why not just run the 101?

Because it cheaper and easier to carry a quart or two of Torco then it is to carry around a 5 gallon jug or two of 101.
I'm not always by a high octane station...

At 470 RWHP I really don't need to and at $6.00 a gallon that would be over $100 a tank. Conventional wisdom says I "could" run straight 91, but raising the octane level to 96 gives me additional and adequate protection against detonation.

If I'm wrong on this someone correct me......

Ahhh I see. I just noticed how much you are paying for 101. I run a 116 mix in the car, but I buy it by the drum. 116 is all my bike runs.

How did you come up with 96 octane? Or am I missing something here?I figure 93.5 octane with your combination.

I used av gas for years in my older carb cars when I worked as an A&P, (got it for free ) but I would not recommend it for your late model Vette.

AV gas comes in 2 octane levels here, I ran it for years in my open class flat track motorcycle when I was still ice racing.... Greatest stuff in the world for that purpose since it has a type of ANTI FREEZE in it to prevent it from freezing up a couple miles up in the air! Not suitable for late model EFI cars with cats etc though....

just curious why you're worried about running 91? at 470hp with an LSA, you can't be running that much timing. i was safely making almost 540 on 93 in my TVS LS1.
