Hello Everyone.
I purchased my Z about a month ago and periodically when I start my car after having it parked for a long period of time (parked for at least 5hours) I hear a slight clanking/rattling noise from under the car directly below the shifter.
The noise sort of sounds like i have updgraded cams or something (like metal vibrating against metal).
I know the noise is directly related to my shifter because it only rattles when I am in Neutral. The noise goes away when I engage a gear but comes back when Im back on Neutral.
Finally the noise dissapears after I drive around for about 10 minutes or so.
Does anyone know whats wrong with my car?
Are all Zs like this?
What can I do to fix this?
Thank you everyone!

Does yours rattle only when you start it up after being parked for a long time?
For example if I park my car for about an hour or so and start her up there is no noise, but after being parked during my 9 hour work shift or overnight the rattling occurs about 1 out of 4 times.
The Noise goes away when I put her in gear but comes back as soon as I pop her in Neutral.

see if pushing the clutch in changes it.
if the noise goes away when the clutch is pushed in and comes back when the clutch is out (in neutral) then it may be either the throw out bearing or a noise coming from the drive shaft with in the torque tube.
either way, if it's not a bad noise, then it's probably nothing to worry about. find someone else with a 6 spd C5 and and let them listen to it to see if it's one of our "normal" noises....

Sounds like the normal "marbles in the can" syndrome. Sometimes the tranny will rattle in neutral ... GM talks about is on the video that came with every Z06. When you push in the clutch, the noise will go away if it's the normal tranny noise. Test it and see.

I will check the next time to see if the noise goes away whenI push the clutch down.
If the noise does indeed go away when the clutch pressed down what does that mean?
If it doesnt go away with the clutch down am I screwed?

Sounds like normal gear rattle. AKA "marbles in a can". What to hear it real loud? Put in neutral, release clutch, turn off engine.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Z06 "name that noise"
My other car is a Lexus, talk about one extreme to the other........

You can also hear the "marbles in the can" noise if you shut the car off in neutral ... sometimes the tranny will really rattle then.
I always shut my car off with the clutch in and in 1st gear ... sounds a lot better, plus I like parking with the tranny in 1st gear and the parking brake on.
