Default Stroked LS3 427 in a C5Z

Curious if anyone here has swapped their LS6 with a stroked LS3 427? I have been contemplating doing this as a project in the future and wanted to get some opinions/comments.

Thanks.

Brian

ECS put an LS7 based 427 in my C5Z and it's the best thing I ever did, car is WAY too much fun to drive now. I take it everyplace I can, it's a blast on the street. I replaced a heads/cam LS6 making 471rwhp and am just in love with the added torque. It ran 11.4 @ 132 with 3.90 gears lifting several times due to wheel hop on street tires. Doing my first track day in 2 weeks, can't wait to really test it out!

Great sounding builds, guys. Isn't amazing how good the C5 is as a performance platform? All different ways of making big power, and handling/braking that's world class. I don't know how long this period of ultra performance is going to last, but I'm grateful that I'm around to partake.

when I won the last Lapbattle I did at the Miller motorsportspark by 2 seconds overall and RWD race class with a blown diff and corded scrubs I was wondering to myself "now why do I think i need more power"

Thanks for the replies so far.

From doing some research on this forum it appears this would be a fairly straighforward swap. I do recall hearing some issues regarding engine mounts however. Trying to identify most of the potential headaches ahead of time prior to diving into this project.

In addition, I'm guessing cost to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $15k for a build and install with good components. Does this sound like I'm in the ballpark?

In your budget of 15K are you including drive line upgrades? Or is that engine only?

If you are engine only 15K is reasonable.

Or is your budget parts only?

The 15K would be engine only. Haven't looked hard at the driveline yet, but it would be a given to upgrade the clutch at a minimum. I have no intention of tracking the car so I don't believe I need to beef up the entire drivetrain. Opinions?

Put the LS7 in my car years ago and love every min of it. I take it to the track all the time and the pull it has is incredible.

maybe a stupid question..but when you swap in the ls3 or ls7 engine in your car that came with a the ls6..with the computer system do u have to swap over the new ecu/pcm to control things on the newer engine..or do u just use your stock OEM ecu/pcm?

You can use the factory C5 computer and harness, you just have to either swap the reluctor wheel on the crank, or you can buy a convertion box from LPE. We swap the reluctor wheel during the builds here.

Billy my old friend, very impressive C5 Z you have there!

You may recall the old days here when I went by, Nitrovette, then MTI 427 Roadster, then Blown ECS Z06.

You need some adaptor harnesses and then just retune the stock PCM for the new engine. I've had mine now for about 4 years and love it.

Hey Jimmy, I remember, you had more names than P Diddy. Things were pretty exciting back then with all the Northeast/Cartek guys getting banned daily. Thanks for the nice words about the car, sounds like you have a pretty mean garage right now from your signature.

Bud, and thanks for the kind words the garage is doing well.

Those were the GOOD old days here no doubt with C5 Pig, Elec Blue 02 Z and Stealth C5, always setting records, and Stealth getting in major beefs with various pinheads.

Did Stealth get banned (again ) do't see him around anymore.
I always was entertained by Mike's threads.

ANYWAYS, back to the OPs post don't want to divert this more than I did.

Go ahead and do a 427 LS3 engine in your C5 you will LOVE IT, and its a gas. I had a 427 C5R Motor years back in my 98 C5 Roadster and it was QUICK as heck and a riot to drive on the street with all that torque.

Just choose your engine builder VERY WISELY and make sure he is fairly close to home and stands behind his work 100%.

Thanks for the advice.

As for builders, seems that we all have a good variety to choose from. Looking at Katech, HKE, and a couple of others.

Katech and HKE are 2 FANTASTIC choices and I had Erik Koenig of HKE, build me a forged LS6 blower motor a few years ago. He is a PREMIER engine builder and b/c he is a very small shop, it takes considerably more time to get the engine, but its WORTH the wait.

If you get the engine through BlancoSS you will probalby get it alot faster than dealing with him 1 on 1 like I did a few years back.

That sounds a lot like what I'm going to have 433 built by Erik Koenig for Aaron Pfadt for his c5 race car( he never used it) . ARE dry sump and full forged Callies rotating assembly. I'm using LS7 heads and intake also can't wait
