Default Need help with electrical issue-Police have made it time sensitive:(

This morning, 2 minutes after leaving my house, I got pulled over by a police officer for the first time in my entire life. I didn't get a ticket, but I got a notice saying I had 10 days to fix a problem with my car that I didn't know it had, or face a big fine.

My car came with aftermarket "euro" tail lamps (not the LED ones, the bulb kind). Both my turn signal and my brake lights work fine, but when I hit the brakes, apparently, my turn signal yellows and my brake reds both come on, which, apparently, is illegal. What could be the source of the problem? I'm at work now, so I haven't had a chance to open them up and look, but I know absolutely nothing about electrical setups and wiring. I always thought the Euro tail lamps were just a plug-and-play part.

Any help would be awesome.

"My turn signal yellows".......this is confusing.

If you mean the signal activates the amber portion of the "euro" tailights, then it's my understanding that is how it is supposed to work!

I thought the whole idea of the euro light was to have red brake lights and amber signals. Am I wrong about this? Or is your description just throwing me off the real problem?

I believe there is a wire that needs to be cut that will stop the lights from doing that. Send Toque a PM. He knows all about those lights and what needs to be done.

I believe he is saying that both come on at the same time, which they are not supposed to do. It should be one or the other, but not both.

This is probably the problem. When I installed mine years ago there was a wire under the dash that I had to cut.

The previous owner DID NOT follow the instructions when they installed them.

When you hit the brakes, the RED part should light up.
When you turn on your turn signal the Amber part should light up.
They are supposed to be totally independent of one another.

Assuming the PO installed all the correct harness's , the problem is that he did not cut the white wire under the dash (my best guess anyway).

I cut the white wire on my install and my brake lights, and turn signals are truly independent of one another.
Tip.... when you cut the white wire under the dash, try to cut it in a way that you can tie it back together again if you go back to stock lighting.

Here is some information on the install procedure.

Hey guys. Thanks so much for this. I'll give it a shot.

By "yellows" what I meant was that there are two sections to the Euro lights, the large "red" section (the "reds" in my original post) and the smaller, turn signal yellow section (the "yellows" in my original post). When I hit the brakes, both red and yellow light up.

Thanks,

Ross

That fixed the problem, 3.5 minutes, a pair of standard scissors, and two little pieces of electrical tape. Cut it with good space on both sides to go back to stock whenever.

You guys rock. This is the greatest car owner's forum on earth.

Baby thanks you:

What happens after 10 days? Is he going to pull you over again to check?

If I don't prove that it's fixed within 10 days, couple hundred dollar fine. No money for them!

Good lord, there is a cop with nothing better to do.

Glad you got your "problem" figured out. I feel safer already.

Yeah, I do love her.

I may or may not be going to test drive a black on black 2009 Z06 this afternoon though.

The OEM mag wheels look good too. Kind of a pricey option back in the day.

A cop pulled my sister over a week or so ago and gave her a warning that one of her brake lights was out on our '68 Bronco she's been driving. Apparently the guy was a real jack@$$ about it, too. Considering the number of Priuses and other cars I see driving around with busted headlights AND tail lights, I don't know what they guy's problem was. Whole thing was fixed in five minutes with a spare bulb we had sitting at home. Told my sis to have her friends who work at Starbucks to spit in the guy's coffee!

And, yeah, that blue... daaaaaamn, I love that color!

Since I'm the curious sort and a little A/R about cutting wires, would it be necessary to cut the wire or would it be better to remove the grey connector and use a tool to pop out the wire from the connector? Then you would just have to wrap the exposed wire end with tape, and if you wanted to reverse the mod just plug the wire back into the connector....

I would think that would be fine...
