Default Cam rec. with 402 short block & AFR 205

I'm replacing my '01Z's injured stock motor with a 402 short block and AFR 205 heads. The car will mainly be used on the track. Maybe an occasional street junket, but not many (if any). I don't have to squeeze every last drop of performance out of it, but I'd like to get what I can with as much durability and reliability as possible. I'd also like to have some driveability. IOW, hopefully it won't idle so poorly that I have trouble simply moving around the paddock.

Anyway, I've talked to Texas Speed about Comp cams in the 244 & 252 range with at or slightly over .600" lift. Is this too aggressive for my stated preferences? Or will it work nicely with the 402? Or, should I consider something else? I'd appreciate any comments or recommendations about what I should be looking for.

Thanks!
Fred

I would really go with AFR 225's in your application. My uncle has a 404ci LS2 and it's completely driveable with mid and high 240 duration on his cam. Really, these days making a big cam work is all in the tuning. You should be fine at the track as it will make torque all over the rev band with it's large displacement.

Cool, thanks for the input. Makes me feel better about the 244 cam. As for the AFR 225s, that'd be nice, but I've got to cap my spending somewhere. I don't mind not getting every last pony here-- it's already gonna be a relative monster anyway. Put it this way: it's a salvage car, and if the 385HP stock engine had been usable, I would have been perfectly happy with that for a while.

So, it's either those AFR 205s or the GM 243 stock '01 LS6 heads. I figure the AFR 205s will let it breathe substantially better than the stock heads, and will give me good torque in the low- & mid-range as well...

I've been doing the same type of cam research for my 385 stroker and looking at what "popular" vendors/tuners use in their 402/408 strokers. This is what I've found:

.613/.619 lift, 244/248 duration at .050, 112 LSA
.648/.648 lift, 244/248 duration at .050, 112 LSA
.610/.610 lift, 236/240 duration at .050, 112 LSA
.600/.600 lift, 240/246 duration at .050, 112 LSA

After talking at length to Brian @ Texas Speed this morning, he assures me that I'll be perfectly happy with the driveability and performance of their "Texas Giant" cam, which is spec'd as:

248/254, .622"/.614", 114 LSA

He says that he even has one customer who has that cam in his only-vehicle, daily driver. Sounds good to me, so that's what I'm going with. Once Jeff & I get this bad boy installed, I'll post back my thoughts.
