Default Don't replace fuel sending unit

Just got my 2k back from Chevy dealer. They wanted to replace my fuel sending unit as they had several others to resolve erratic fuel gauge problem. After "doing some research" they finall found the TSB that I told them about (thanks forum). The new fix is (for me) free of charge and will even possibly work. It is a software problem involving the PCM. There is also another upgrade they did at the same time w/o notifying me(another TSB they found). They couldn't tell me what that was for. They did tell me they used the SPECIAL TOOL. Hope this works. If anyone else has has this done let me know if it works.

My connections at the sending units were corroded which was the issue so for some vettes it may be more than one problem…

This is was one of the first serious issues with the C5. Even before
the dreaded column lock. That TSB has GOT to be dated from 98'
or 99'. It was a definite problem on a good many 97-99 cars.

It happened to me too(under warranty), 6-months after purchase.
4-years and 70k miles later not a problem.

Just had mine replaced last week on my 2002. They said I already had the latest program loaded.

This recently happened to my 2000 vert with 18k on it. Turning off the engine and restarting seemed to clear the problem. Question, if the gauge should quit altogether, would the display that calculates remaining fuel and DTE still work? If so, I guess i could still judge when fuel is running low by keeping an eye on the DTE... . any thoughts on this? :steering:

My remaining miles calculator didn't work (although, the "instant mpg" and "avg mpg" still worked). I would just fill up every 350 miles on the trip odometer. Just had to remember to set it. The biggest pain is every 10 min the DIC tells you "low fuel". Stupid GM. Who in the world would make a gas gauge that corrodes in GAS?! Then keep doing it for 6 years??? If I ever meet the engineer/beancounter responsible for those decisions I am gonna kick them in the teeth.

Mine has been replaced 3 times. 1st owner, 2nd owner (weeks before I purchased the car), myself (failed the 2nd day I had the car). Only one scare since I have had it replaced 10 months (10k miles) ago (scared 'cause now it is out of warranty and will be fixed out of MY pocket).

I say :bs .

The computer reprogramm to fix the sending unit issue is for 2001 & up.

The 2000 PCM cannot take that adjustment.

Erratic Fuel Gauge Reading (Reprogram the PCM) #02-06-04-010A - (06/27/2003)
Erratic Fuel Gauge Reading (Reprogram the PCM)
1999-2002 Chevrolet Corvette

This bulletin is being revised to add models and update the Correction and Warranty Information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 02-06-04-010 (Section 06- Engine).

Condition
Some owners may comment about the fuel gauge intermittently indicating an empty reading and then return to the correct fuel level indication.

Cause
This condition may result when fuel blends containing aggressive sulphur compounds react with the fuel sender assembly, which may result in voltage spikes being induced on the fuel level signal to the PCM. Use of another fuel blend may reverse this reaction and return the system to normal operation.

Correction
Reprogram the PCM with the new service calibration which is available in the June 2003, Techline® TIS release sent to the dealers on 6/28/03. Use the TIS Version 7 or later data update.

Warranty Information
For vehicles repaired under warranty, use:

Looks like the 97/98's that have this are still hosed :mad Mine is very erratic. I tried the fuel cleaner/injector cleaner drill and it still dropped to zero, then would stay for several tanks, and drop again for X number of starts(no pattern at all) and then come back and be accurate. I now depend on the trip odometer and hit gas every 325-350 miles. This is pretty pathetic. :bs :boxing

Thanks for this info. Recently purchased a 2000 c5 M6 w/126,000 on odometer. Am I out of luck for a warrnty fix by the general? Also i found 3-4 more TSB's. I've noticed my steering wheel does'nt lock when key removed. don't no if this is fix or what, the previous owner has no idea either. I will reach out to my local dealer. Any info on the c5 Gremlins woild be helpful. Best, G. E. INFORM@: etcazr1-ail@yahoo.com/.

Would a dealership still be able to pull this update and do it after 20 years, and what would you tell them. Nothing has worked for me in the last 3 years

The thread is over 20 years old, and the guy in the post before you hasn't been here for 14 years. Dates matter.......
