Default What's the widest tire I can put on my OEM rear wheel w/out sticking out or tubbing?

275/40 -18 inches = Stock

I want to buy the widest rear tire that will safely fit on my car. Not wheels, just big tires to mount to the stock rear wheels.

What Nitto or BF G are you guys running (285/35 ??) on stock rear rims for maximun traction at the track?
Is there such a tire ?
I do not want the tire to stick out.
Can changing profile/width affect my speedometer ?

Any help would be appreciated - Thanks.

There are several guys running 295/35/18's on stock C5 rims. I am probably going to do the same very soon. It is 20mm wider than stock, but since the sidewall is a 35 instead of a 40, the tire is actually still about .6" shorter in height than the stock tire.

I am running 305 Nitto Drag radials, I have also seen 315 BFG Drag radials on stock rims, which will be my next tires.

I went through all this a few weeks ago. I ended up deciding on the 285 Nitto DR's for the back and 245 Nittos ( non-DR's ) for the front. Discount Tire cautioned me about running greater than a 285 on my rims. I'm sure it can be done, but, I felt more comfortable sticking closer to stick sizes. Also note that tire price increases significantly with size.

FWIW, the Discount Tire at 16 and Van **** that just opened is offering an additional $25 off as part of their Grand Opening.

Mark, do you recall exactly why discount cautioned against larger than 285's ? What is the profile on the Nitto 305 ?

Thanks for the input fellas, will this affect my speedo ?
