My favorite quote:

"Remove the 4 nuts holding the cradle to the car (21mm I believe). NO IMPACT TOOLS.

Using impact tools can break the retaining rivet that prevents the large studs from rotating.

If you do this, you will have to remove your carpet, and cut an access hole in the floorpan of your car.

Not fun. Ask me how I know..."

Sorry dude, but I had to laugh! My knuckles bleed for you dude...

Having done this once myself, I would hazzard a guess that I could now do this replacement again in about 6 hours. I've got a lift and a lift trans jack, but could see someone doing it off jack stands in about 6-8 hours... Once you understand just what parts need to be disconnected on the rear suspension, it isn't that bad.

Wow, blast from the past. Hard to believe that was 7 years ago. Still have the car and still have the same clutch in it!

Dope,

I don't think I got a chance to thank you for your write-up. My hands hurt too much at the time.

Thanks,

Al

Now if you will just do one making a head/cam swap reasonable that would be great.

I must thank you, too! After checking out prices and time frame for others to do it, I looked up your tutorial and said to myself "I can do this." So my car's been on jackstands now while I'm changing the entire clutch system and doing some otherwork at the same time and everything's been going fine. Thank you, Dope!

If everything goes okay I should be back on the ground this weekend!!!!

Currently fighting with the GD'ed pilot bearing. I really wish they had used a larger bearing so you could get a good three-jaw puller in there and pull it out cleanly. Off to Home Depot to create the Dope super-duper bearing puller.

Otherwise, Dope's instructions ahve been spot on!

I used a little bit of HEAT (propane torch ) to heat up the crank around the pilot bearing hole and warmed the crank to about 120 deg. Once it was heated, the standard rental tool from Autozone popped it right out!!

Be careful of the Welsh plug in the back of the crank and don't damage it.

I just saw that this thread is still continuing. I previously posted that I recently was doing a clutch swap and using the "Dope" tutorial. Aside from the clutch swap I also disassembled my torque tube to check it out and also replaced an axle shaft seal, aside from other maintenance and cleaning of the underside while it was all apart. I was in no rush and took several weeks to get it done just working on it mainly on Sundays. The job was a total success and the car has driven perfectly from the moment the wheels once again touched the ground.

One helpful hint I discovered. There is a 3-finger puller tool for removing the pilot bearing. I believe it's a Snap-On tool. A friend of mine is a GM master tech and happens to have this tool in his toolbox. I was able to borrow it from him and it makes removing the pilot bearing alot easier. The three fingers actually fit inside the bearing. Just tighten and the bearing pulls out.
