Default 3M Paint Protection Film

Hi All- I'll be picking up my first Vette- an '07 VR MN6 Z51 Coupe in Bowling Green in 2 weeks. The dealer showed me some paint protection films I can have applied when I get back. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Silver package: Laser cut hood film and installation
Gold package: Laser cut hood, fenders, mirrors, door edge, and install.
Platinum: adds front bumper to Gold package
Front Bumper only: laser cut front bumper and install

This will be a summertime daily driver. I plan on taking meticulous care of the finish- washing, dusting, Zaino, etc. Will this film cloud up if washed? Brand new it is nearly invisible, but how does it age? What about pitting- there will be rocks, eventually. I'd rather them hit the film than chip the paint, but will my film have tiny flaps peeled away over time?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

No worries, I won't forget the wave!

Hello I'm a C5 owner that wandered into your site. I have used the
3-M product on a couple of cars over the years and the newest
product is the best. It's thinner more durable, and will probably
last longer. Your dealer should have given you written material
explaning the product and warranity. It will not cloud or yellow
or lift off, you can wax over the film and you have great protection
from bugs and stones. I believe the warranity is 5 years by that
time you will be buying the newest vette.

The only advice I would give is make sure you get a qualified installer. Many dealers have people that can put on film but if not done correctly you will be left with stretch marks and other imperfections.

The installer is the key.

I'd have it done, but not by the dealer at any cost. Some dealers have been "trained" by a real installer, but I'd rather have the certified guy do my install.

The bumper portion of the kit is supposed to be the hardest to put on. The hood is easy, and shouldn't cost much at all. But the bumper has so many compound curves that the install takes a long time.

I had everything except the lights done on mine and love it. Most dealers use a local company to install this for them, which means they are probably adding a profit on top of the install. Go to xpel.com and you can search for qualified installers in your area, and will probably find it cheaper. You should be paying about $750 for everything, which would be the platinum package plus the rocker panels and behind each wheel.

I forgot to answer the rest of your questions. The film will not cloud with washing. Mine gets quite a workout. If a large enough rock hits it, you may get a small ding in the film, but I have not gotten a "flap". Most rocks and debris bounce off the film without leaving a mark. The biggest question I get at car shows is who scratched your car? On dark cars like my leMans Blue you can see the edge of the film, so I often have to explain what's on the front end. It is still better than having rock chips on the front end in my opinion, and saves may of the marks from happening.

3M has a website specifically with installers recommended for your arrea. Most dealers have qualified peop come by in trucks to do the work. Not bad. Better is the certified installer list you will find on the 3M site.

As said above, the installer is everything, not the product. Find out A. how many cars/Vettes worked on. B. where is his shop? C. what's the guarantee on HIS work? (should be forever on quality of work; most/many will need a slight adjustment -- I've had 2-- both did.).

Not the worst of things, but be wary of those without a physical location. And shop around for price but note experience is far, far more important.

I'm very happy with my 3M bra. It is all about the installer though.

If you had it to do over again, would you consider doing the whole hood to avoid an obvious line?

No. The line is not really obvious. You just notice it if you're looking closely. I know what it is, and like knowing the protection it's giving me, so it doesn't bother me.

Here's that website for anyone else considering it:

I think I'm going to get the whole deal done. Thanks all for your advice. If anyone has pictures of this installed on Victory Red, I'd love to see it! R8C countdown is at 10 days!!

Altho both mine done were on light-colored caes, the answer is yes: the next time I will get what's called a hood wrap." (material wraps around the edges and underneath)

Reason is, it will protect the entire hood.

Secondary reason is that it'll be easier to maintain w/o the barely-visible line betw. where the clear bra begins and ends.
