in the Cocoa beach Parade of Astronauts on Saturday, the 7th of May, 2011...with my wife Traci driving our silver '82 with Walt Cunningham riding. We didn't know was to ride in what car since we had no final count of which Astronaut would finally show up...so signs on the cars changed a couple of times. Mr. Cunningham is also the lone surviving member of the Apollo 7 crew...and he signed the plastic fuel rake cover on my Victory Red convertible '06, which I also paraded, but had a good friend of mine riding with me while his wife drove an Astronaut too. All of us can be seen in a YouTube video which is quite lengthy, but worthwhile viewing. Just type in Astronaut Parade. I would post a couple of pictures, but for some reason, this forum's inserting of images is rather archaic. Instead, go to this link and u will view 19 pics of the parade...and our '82 with Mr. Cunningham.

Very cool thread, thanks for posting the pics and info.
It's ironic how so many have taken for granted the incredible achievement of modern-day space flight and only when there's some catastrophic failure do they recognize what an extraordinary challenge it is to successfully mount one of these expeditions.
When I was a growing up, every launch was significant and we all watched in awe as we followed the mission. Failures were heartbreaking and really tested the country's commitment.
NASA got so good at doing it right, especially with the Space Shuttle, that it almost became commonplace and seemingly less noteworthy to the general public.
Our astronauts exploits and courage will always be a great source of pride for me and this insight into their Earthly endeavors is even more meaningful because we share a common link, Corvettes.
My hat's off.

I love the NASA story. I have the DVD series "From the Earth to the Moon." My family gave it to me for my birthday years ago.
My favorite episode is about Apollo 12. I think it is disc 7. Those guys had a great time.
The three of them had matching corvettes which were painted gold with a black area just below each window. In that area the flight position (or rank) for each was painted.
The episode ends with them racing off in their corvettes.
I have read that a local Chevy dealer gave all astronauts of that time new corvettes donated by Chevy I think.
I was very young but I remember sitting on the living rook floor in July of 1969 watching the lunar landing and surface walks.
The movie "The Right Stuff" is good also and Alan Sheppard is prominent in that movie.
What a time!

The real shame here is the appearance that our country might be stopping manned exploration of space. Personal opinion of mine only is that mankind's future is out there. I've met a lot of astronauts in my time and they are all very cool people and I'm sure those who have already gone are turning over in their graves about things slowing down or stopping altogether.

Anyone around Cocoa Beach tonight might want to stop by the Comfort Inn, just south of RonJons. The Military Affairs Council of the Cocoa Beach Chamber of Commerce is having an auction and one of the items is a limited-edition poster signed by all the astronauts in the parade. Some of these signatures are from guys who've never done that before. Astronaut John McBride, who helped corral the guys for the parade, also got their signatures for this poster. $5 admission, starts at 1800. Good cause, great opportunity.
