Default Oil change this fall or wait till spring

Due to a temporary work transfer, I only put on 1000 miles on my 2010 Vette this summer. I would be bringing it into the GM shop for an oil change. My question is should I or can I wait till spring to change the oil? I live in Northern Minnesota so it will be stored in my heated garage during the winter. If I am supposed to change before winter, do I have to change again in the spring when I start to use it again? Thanks for your help.

What does your oil life monitor say is left? Go by that.

I always change before winter on everything regardless of how many miles I put on. Come spring, she's ready to rock, no additional change needed.

Old oil has contaminants, new oil does not. I don't want contaminants sitting in my engine over the winter if I can help it, and I can.

YOU WILL FIND THAT MANY DISAGREE WITH MY VIEWS. So be it. This is MY opinion, it has worked well for me.

Oil change, sta-bil, Battery Tender and car cover.

Once-a-year oil change before winter storage.

With 1000 on that oil, I'd leave it. To get rid of the contaminants, just drive your car for a good 30 minutes before storing it, making sure the oil gets to optimal temperature for a good 10 minutes. The additives get rid of the contaminants by eliminating them.

I would even keep this oil in until next fall, as long as it's Mobil 1 Synthetic in there.

Talked to the Corvette engineers at Bloomington and they said it makes no difference when you change it because its synthetic. At the same time if you only put 1000 miles a yr. on your Vette you can go 2 to 3 yrs. on a change according to the same engineers. I always change my oil when I put it away in the fall because I put it up on 12" raceramp wheel cribs and leave it there for the winter and then in the spring its done.

Everyone I know always changed theirs in the fall, and I do the opposite in all my toys that have to be winterized. The vette is a DD so it does not matter there. For me though, living in TN we have some pretty major weather changes. If there happes to be anything that may cause condensation, then I want that out before I fire it up for the first time in the spring. All the oil is going to completely settle in the pan anyway so any contaminants are going to settle all the way to the bottom. Fresh year, fresh oil. That is my opinion, yours may vary.

Same here (though I do not have to put in storage, and drive occasionally throughout the winter, which is safe to do in this climate. Nevertheless, I change oil in the fall, and since I average only 2k miles a year, it is the only time I change oil and filter).

Engineers have confirmed to me 2-3 yrs is fine on <1000 mi/yr cars.

Many will hate on this advice; but its what chemical engineers and auto-engineers with billion dollar budgets conslude.

I change the oil after the Winter storage, usually have about 80% showing on the DIC when I put it away.

At 6000 miles I still have 68 % showing on the DIC. Since I put on about 8000 miles a year I do change it every fall when I put it away for the winter by then I have about 50% showing on the DIC

Follow what your owners manual states:

The GMOLS was created for a valid set of reasons!

DIC = 0%, not to exceed a one year time interval.

In the Spring, as someone already said, new driving season, new oil.

But, I also know that it makes no difference what so ever and if anyone believes it does, they have no clues.

I live in Wisconsin, the Chev Shop Manager tells us to wait until spring to change the oil. The dealership does not change the oil on the cars that they have sitting on the lot in the fall (I am speaking of used cars).

1000 miles on 10 qts of synthetic is NOTHING - it's practically brand new... save your money and time, leave it in there, the GM service dept will do more damage to the car than the tiny bit of contaminants in the oil (which I doubt are at all significant after only 1000 miles)
