Default Wheel Caps Fell Off

Rear wheel center caps fell off. Found one and bought one for $80. Car is 08 Zo6 with stock chevy chrome wheels. Anyone know how to keep them on before I reinstall them? Going for a ride today along the Columbia River in WA, OR. Thanks

Is it possible that the specs on your wheel are not exactly right? Or was the cap faulty? That could be an expensive experiment to find out. Let us know.

I used a dab of RTV silicone on the tabs, you can still remove them if you need to, but you won't lose one again.

$80 bucks for one cap, what the heck, as bought a set of four oem polished jobs from Fichtner in MT for that a couple years back. If these are coming off, can be a sign of overheating brakes, so maybe worth looking into. Best way I know to snug the caps back up, is hitting the mounting tabs with a heat gun, and spreading them out a bit.

The center caps on my 2 C5s and 1 C6 are/were all hard to get off. If yours are loose it could be that somebody broke one of the tangs off. Have never lost a center cap while driving.

He did say chrome and the chrome ones are alot more than the polished. I had some aftermarket wheels for awhile and just put 2-3 wraps of electrical tape around the tangs and never had a problem.

Teflon in itself is really soft so I'm surprised the tape wasn't immediately cut when you installed the caps.

Might have, but since they didn't fall off, he had no reason to look!

Au Contraire, mes amis! (no French Fries, please, I'm on a diet. ). Actually, I've had the caps off many times. I do have to be quite careful putting them back on, but the teflon tape doesn't move out of the way and seems to do the job.

One other thing, there's that bright orange "tape" which is actually just stretchy vinyl, at Home Depot. About 1" by 50 yards or some such. I've got one center cap wrapped in it (3 with teflon, 1 with stretch orange tape). The orange tape is, of course, thicker by a margin of two or three times the teflon.

So far, they both seem to work. My plastic caps were black chromed and it's expensive to get them re-done and thus, the precautions.

Chrome center caps are very expensive. Also, remember that it is winter, make sure plastic is warm before bending or flexing...expense can follow.

For my 2007, Gene has the regular center caps at $22 whereas the chrome ones are $73...big diff.

Center caps just don't fall off in my experience unless they are already damaged with broken capturing tangs.

I learned from past wheels with these caps. Silicone works great.

As mentioned earlier, heat gun. If you need the tires replaced/serviced, the shop needs to remove the caps, ripping out any glue you might've used. I road track my car several times a year, and always pull the center caps, because of brake heat, and possibly flying off into other cars. Gluing them on, really isn't the greatest idea.
