Rethinking Grundy Insurance on my '13 427 Vert
I currently have Grundy Collector Car insurance on my '13 427 Vert because it is only a weekend driver and it costs less than half of what my DD insurance was going to charge me. The wife and I are planning a couple of weekend trips in the fall around 500 miles and 150 miles round trip respectively. I called Grundy to make sure this would be acceptable under their coverage. I was told I would have to tow the vehicle there and arrange to keep it in a garage while staying out of town. This is neither practical nor enjoyable. I asked if there were a special rider I could purchase to insure the car for the road trip...there is not! Looks like my only option for taking the car out of town is to cancel my insurance with Grundy and go with a traditional coverage. Hoping someone might have a better solution. My DD insurance does not offer any sort of discount for low usage other than a data tracker you plug into the car, and that tracks acceleration and hard braking. It might actually make my premiums go up as I only drive my cars for fun and often spiritedly. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Edit after speaking with a Grundy manager: I was once again told that if I were using the vehicle for vacation purposes, I would need coverage that falls in line with a DD, but if I were traveling for a car show or event, it would be covered including the overnight stay in the hotel parking lot, etc. Because of some of the questions that have arisen from this thread about not being covered running errands, I also asked for clarification on this type of usage. I was told I was covered for pleasure driving and if that entailed stopping by a store on the way home I would be covered. So if you have Grundy or similar and plan on taking a vacation in your Corvette find a car show at your destination and state that as your main purpose or your trip. If you want to run an errand in your car, you must state you were out "pleasure driving" and had to make a stop. Or you could just skip the BS and get an insurance that doesn't have all the usage restrictions. Thanks for all the info! I am going to look into a few of these other providers.

Just went through the same thing when I bought my Vette. Always had Grundy for 67 Camaro, but got the Vette to drive so I paid the extra and went with my DD insurance company. I drive everywhere without thinking about it. Grundy can be strict on other things too. I have heard if you stop at a store to pick some things up and get hit, then you are not covered with Grundy since you are using it as a regular car.

I’d be dropping them like a bad habit. No company that I pay to protect my vehicle will tell me how and when and under what circumstances I can drive my car. My vette runs $100-120/mo (can’t remember exact number) for full coverage. Being able to do whatever I want when I want how I want is worth that.

Call NCM insurance. 500 or so a year with agreed value and use is for pleasure and corvette/car events can’t take it to work or the store. But if the store is a stop along the way to a show or event it’s covered per my understanding.
also Hagerty is another to check out. Had that on my C3. But they also do newer cars. You just have to have a newer DD for a 1st car.

That's insane. Check with Hagerty and NCM. You should be able to drive your car to and from a car show (and I'm sure you can document there being one or two along your route), or stop at Target to pick up a quart of oil. NCM told me a leisure drive is covered, so is going to a restaurant, etc. They just don't want you driving it to the supermarket. But even then, you could have stopped to pick up a can of pringles on your way to the tire store. I read some negativity about Grundy when I was researching, which is why I didn't go with them.

Interesting. I had never thought about a specialty insurer being like that. Definitely is good info. Not being able to stop at a store for a coke and then having to look for a garage is enough for me to say No Thanks.

This is the first I've heard about not being able to run an errand (store, etc.). I'd say 50% of my driving is for exactly that. With little kids, I don't get the luxury of driving around aimlessly very often. Think I may need to have a heart to heart with a manager @ Grundy. They may lose my '13 and my '70 if that is truly the case. Thanks to all for chiming in!

why I have never used one of those companies...too much

When I got their insurance a few months ago I asked about traveling and they said no problem. I told them I’d be staying in hotels and no garage. I’m going to check again.

I went with Safeco after being told by Hagerty that they don't like my neighborhood and wouldn't cover me. I get a big discount for driving less than 5 miles per day, and it's an agreed value policy. I have it covered for the total amount I paid for it plus enough extra to cover all of the mods I've put into it.

I'm thinking about switching to Hagerty. I drive my 05 about 600 miles a year and I pay over a $1000 a year (full coverage) with the good neighbor guys. I have several policies with them so I get a multi line and multi car discount (?) from them. I receive excellent service from my agent but everytime I leave his office my butt feels greasy. I guess I should be glad that at least he uses lubricant.

My DD insurance is currently charging me about $1800/yr for my '16 Z06 and they quoted me the same for the 427. $3,600 per year seems a little excessive for 2 cars that probably won't see 3,000 miles combined in a years time. Keep in mind this price is for insuring myself (36) and my wife (38) insuring 4 cars (Odyssey & Sierra DDs) so it includes multi car discount, homeowners policy discount, no auto claims, no accidents, no violations. With Grundy, I only pay $600 a year for the 427 with a $55K agreed value. I just got a quote from NCM for $3300 a year for my '70, '13 & '16. For the extra $600 seems like my DD insurance may be the way to go.

I absolutely would! I think I am going to call back and ask to speak with a manager (when I can find the time). The lady I talked to was very matter-of-fact. She had no interest in checking into it for me. Just kind of shot off the hip and said NO, YOU CAN'T DO THAT. I'm hoping I got some bad information as Grundy has been super easy to deal with up to this. I've heard a lot of good things about Grundy until I started looking today I hadn't heard any bad. I'll make sure to edit my first post if it turns out I got bad info.

I would check what is written in the policy. The "verbal" understanding from one of their agents on the phone is not worth anything if you have claim.

You might check with your State. In Texas Ins Cos can't enforce their terms of use or mileage restrictions. All insurance must comply with Texas guidelines to be sold here.
My DD ins co told me this when I was looking for insurance on a 85 Vette that my 16 yo son would drive. Ins in my name but all family members were covered. Went with Hagerty for 150 a year agreed value policy.
Never had to file a claim so don't know how hard they would fight back.
