I know this won't apply to all clicking noise situations but don't forget to tighten the 33mm axle nuts on the rear wheels. I thought I needed new sway bar endlinks to get rid of a constant "click" noise coming from underneath. That didn't work, but tightening one SLIGHTLY loose axle nut got rid of the click.

Loose axle nuts are very common. I have encountered this on two Z's and I had bought both new. It is also common to get a clunking sound which is also the axle nut. I had the clunk and read up yrs ago about the axle nut which was the only reason I bought a 33mm!! Was a good investment because that is what it was!!

I bought an extra pair of nuts and torque them significantly less than the primary nut to keep them from binding together and they act as lock nuts.
No more loose nuts.
No more loose nuts.

For those of us who have not checked the nuts, can anyone advise of the rear axle nut torque specs?
And does this apply to the coupes/verts also or is this just a Z06 issue?

I do the same thing. Torque the nuts to correct spec and then double-nut them. There is room/space to do this, and you won't have to mess with it again.

GM has a TSB on this.
Condition
Some customers may comment on a tapping or a scraping noise coming from the rear wheel area.
Cause
This condition may be due to the torque on the wheel drive shaft nut relaxing over time.
Correction
Replace the left and the right wheel drive shaft nut following the procedure below.
Remove the center cap from the rim.
Remove and discard the wheel drive shaft nut.
Apply LOCTITE™ 272, or equivalent, to the threads of the axle shaft.
Install the nut and tighten to the new specification.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 215 N·m (160 lb ft).
Install the center cap to the rim.
Important: The vehicle should not be driven for 24 hours following the repair in order to allow the thread lock to cure.

Hello, i would like to leave a word off gratitude. Had the clunk in the rear yesterday in a traffic jam, braking and pulling up. At home first rocked the rear wheel to the front and backwards, sounded terrible was afraid for the worse. But then looked on this forum and saw the rear axle nuts, checked them and my god were they loose. Tightened them and gone is the clunk.
Thanks and greetings to you all from the netherlands.

I had the clicking noise too, but my axle nuts were NOT loose. The problem was the axle shafts were heavily rusted and needed some lubrication which quieted them right down. Hard to believe a 30 tooth spline could be so noisy, but nothing that can't be easily rectified.

I too had this problem. 1.5 hours of work for both rear wheels and putting together a contraption on my breaker bar to get enough torque to take the huge 34 mm. axle nut off
THANK YOU EVERYONE ON HERE! My car is fun to drive again!
I hated the stupid clicking sound!

I was in the dealership Wednesday and saw a TSB on clicking on the front end..................I didn't read it since mine was from the rear. Call your GM dealership and talk to a tech and see what the front end write up is all about...............
