Lack of solid evidence of real damage, car operates great, no car fax history, not sure you really have a problem. Should you be able to track down real damage, you have option to confront dealer for $ adjustment. I believe going on notice with the dealer now and requesting more information is the best thing to do.... Hopefully the info will come back with a minor damage claim.... You have a great car, enjoy it !!!

I spent all afternoon in the garage with the car yesterday, and drove it 200 miles home Friday night. Aside from the front splitter (which they threw a new one into the deal) and a small clearcoat scratch on the left rear quarter panel, there is nothing visibly wrong with the car. I washed the car twice, clay bar'd it, and applied the first coat of zaino. There's nothing obviously different about the paint or condition of any area. I am, of course, not an expert.

The car drove fine on the 200 mile ride home. It doesn't even have the dreaded vibration issue from 72-80.

I'm certainly not trying to justify anything. If I don't get a suitable answer by noon tomorrow, I'm bringing the car back. I'm sure that will create a war, because although I have three business days to bring it back, it's only 150 miles.. and I burned that just on the ride home.

Ahhh...

They seem to have been upfront with you thus far.

With the Carfax being clean and Auto Check having a record shows that someone is incorrect. If the damage record is correct, hopefully it's something like a windshield replacement.

Another large girl here to tell you your car is sexy. Seriously, it just isn't fair how much better looking that car is than the rest of C6 class.

As far as the Carfax/Autocheck thing... The information they report is only as good as the information received. In my 10 years in the car business, very, very rarely does the story a customer tells match what it says on those reports. I have seen cars that I had personal knowledge of a serious collision (Z06 with $10k+ worth of damage, with a police report and insurance claim) run a clean report, and some really trivial things (over cautious person reporting an accident with no damage in a parking lot) show up as something that sounded much worse. My personal vehicle was in an accident that involved a guard rail, but the report said something about another vehicle. It also reported odometer fraud (you have to be very sure that service departments are accurately recording mileage or you will end up like me). I had to call carfax and get corrections made (which they did).

You told me this was a one owner car, and that it was not purchased from the auction. Give the dealer the opportunity to contact the previous owner and see if they can document what happened. If the front splitter and tire were replaced, maybe the guy had an issue with a nasty driveway or something. It could be something really minor, but either way they should be able to provide you with something to make an educated decision on keeping the car.

Let me know if you want me to overnight my paint meter to you. LOL

oh well, the lesson is do research before writing the check.....and stop searching after its home.....lol. im sure its fine, i wouldnt worry too much. as your finding out, these carfaxes and the like are not accurate at all. your better off going over the vehicle yourself, or have a experienced person check it over. its all good, like i said im sure its fine. go enjoy it!! Good luck and use it in good health!!

I did some googling, since I had the guys name from the book... Found out he was arrested in January of 2011 for DUI. I wonder if the two are related. Car impoundment maybe?

I dunno. The front splitter is damaged, maybe he filed a claim against the towing company.

Which would explain the damage to the splitter.

...You beat me to it.

He probably collected on the damaged splitter and never replaced it. ($1,700+- in his pocket)

IMO, the best thing to do is to take the car to a body shop you trust and get it up on a lift (properly w/jacking pucks),
and have the entire undercarriage inspected. Look for other damage. This way, you will be better informed.

If there's no other damage, you might be able to work out a purchase price adjustment with the selling dealer,
to your satisfaction. If there is other damage that is significant, you've already said you have a right to return
the car.

Good luck...!

Can you do that with a lien on the car?

^ you can, but the insurance co, will record "diminished value" in your records for the repairs paid for
but not actually performed. Also, the ins. co. won't pay the full amount of the claim in such case...

Talked to the dealer. He called and spoke to the dude's wife (hasn't reached him yet).

They apparently did warranty work for the clutch and in the driveway hit a trailer with the front splitter (related to the clutch problem I guess) and had to get it replaced.

The dealer is looking it up in the dealer database for the service work, and they're going to get documentation from the owners on exactly what happened.

If this holds true, I'm keeping the car.

Maintenance records confirm (thanks Ali ) what the dealer and previous owner say.

The timeline matches. I'm going to talk to Autocheck about getting this record removed, but at the very least I'll keep documentation in case I ever do sell it.

Yeah, no kidding! I was dreading the idea of driving 200 miles back to Cape Coral in this weather. I got caught in a rain storm on the way home and that was squirrely enough for me.

Unfortunately, even when the rain finally quits (hopefully this weekend), I won't be able to drive it again until next week since we're doing an exercise at work.

I'm just so relieved that this turned out to be easily explainable.
