Default New Build: AHP Heads + BTR Stg 3 CAM + bolt ons

So I sold my z06 earlier in the year and totally regretted it, i just had to get it back.. this time i switched to black on black..

Anyways, it has about 50k miles and nothing done to it, perfect for this build.

Plan:
- do the heads (Stage 4 American Heritage Performance with .030 milling + hardened guids + all the works)
- more aggressive cam then last time (last one was BTR STG II)
- exhaust
- headers
- CAI intake
- Cosmetics: ZR1 Front splitter + ZR1 Rear spoilier + Extended side skirts from C7 Carbon

Phase 1: Order parts
- AHP Stage 4 package heads, milled .030 and cnc ported
- BTR .700 pac dual springs
- AHP Polished BTR Stage 3 LS7 cam
- BTR Trunion Upgrade
- C5R Timing Chain
- K&N CAI
- American Racing Headers w/x-pipe (Catted)

Phase 2: Install @ shop
- Last time the shop I chose locally did an excellent job, going to go back on Nov 7 to get this new package done

Phase 3: Tune
- The tuner last time (Bill @ Independant SpeedShop got my around 540rwhp on a very conservative tune)
- This time we will be using 94 octane, and aim for 575-580rwhp mark with bit more flexible tue

Phase 4: Timeslip??
- Not sure if I will goto the strip but its tempting.

Next steps:
- AHP Ported MSD intake manifold? thoughts? worth the price?
- B&B Fusion exhaust? Is the stage 3 too loud? Do i need the mild to wild switch?

- Is this setup compatible with a supercharger or turbo later? I know the overlap is slightly higher then most cams and may not be as good as the blower cams due to the boost escaping due to larger overlap..

thoughts?

If you do the ported MSD (I did HCIE with unported MSD, K501 cam) you would want a CAI and NW 102 to get the air into the nice heads.

The B&B Fusion III's are $$ but great sound. You will want mild to wild switch as you will enjoy open around town (and get many nice comments) but closed for cruising. On the highway at 60-75 MPH in 6th with the valves closed it will be louder than stock, moderate hum to light drone, above that it is fine. Too much drone on the highway in that 1200-1700 RPM range with the valves open. I think B&B got 2-3 more Fusion III sales by other customers listening to mine in the shop before I picked it up.

I'm going through a similar process right now! The cam I chose (spec'd by Pat Guerra) is very similar to a BTR II. I didn't want to go bigger than that. Couple thoughts:

1. I'd skip the trunion upgrade. I asked Kohle if it was worth doing this when I got his AHP Stage 4 heads milled .020, and he said no. Other people are split on this though. Up to you.
2. Get a Hinson C7R timing chain. Basically the same price as a C5R, and is stronger.
3. If you can afford it, get the ported MSD and NW102 now. That's what I'm doing. MSD ported by Tony Mamo. Just the porting alone can be worth another 15-20+ hp on the MSD (I've read many posts proving/showing this.) As other have said, get the NW102 as well - get as much air as you can going through those heads!

Other than that, your plans look great! Good luck!

thanks brother

1. the trunion upgrade is a smaller investment so i think it is worth it.
2. i should have gotten c7r chain but now its too late.
3. i dont know if i can put in another 1800 for ported msd and TB. but definitely in the plans for next few months.

updates to follow after dyno!

Skip the BTR trunion upgrade. Stock, Straub, Smith Bros, or CHE.

The comp cams one just throws extra metal pieces into your oil. I have CHE from WCCH now. I think the BTR ones are better but I don't think they have them anymore.

I am using the BTR stage 3 cam (and other engine mods) with LG super pro headers, no cats and LG x-pipe and stock mufflers with a mild to wild switch. Sound good and others tell me so. 575 rwhp.
I did use the Comp Cam trunion upgrade and have not had a single issue with them in the 23,000 miles since the engine work that I did to it. But I am going to recheck them this winter. Using Mobil 1 5w-30.

What are your thoughts on later putting on a supercharger with this cam?

- would it be worth it?
- would it be a waste due to too much overlap of cam?

Perhaps. But the biggest issue I'd see is compression with the .030 mill and stock bottom end, which doesn't like detonation...at all. Shattered pistons, cracked sleeves...doesn't take much to do that in these with stock bottom end. You'd most assuredly want to be full-time E85 if you did go FI. E85 + high compression = good gains in HP. Just my $.02...

Its more the stock ring gap you have to worry about when boosting (stock bottom end) the LS7.

Less overlap would be much more ideal for a boosted car.
Will it work: Yes but it would not be the ideal cam for a sc.

I know it's kind of an older post, but what is your static compression ratio?
