Default What is too much? (cam)

My C6 has #243 Lingenfelter modded heads, headers, exhaust and a lid. I was thinking of installing a cam but I dont want to take away from reliability. I want be able to make a 400 mile round trip without having to worry about anything..

I'm not new to performance as my 85 Camaro had a twin turbo 406 putting out 700HP on pump gas @10# boost. I ran a solid roller cam on the street but this will be my first C6 with "newer technology" since I was blow-thru on the TT car.

I'm not looking at making another 700+hp car, otherwise I would have kept my Camaro. I just want a stout small block.

This vid got me a little excited...

I am by no means anywhere near being an expert of this matter. I still have the stock heads but added a cam that would hopefully work well with heads down the road. I've got a VR, FAST, Kooks long-tubes, cat-back and my cam is a Comp Cams 230/236 .608/.613 113lsa on XFI lobes. It's more of a high end cam and drives nicely but between 1400-1600, there is some bucking...it wants to lope there. Car made 450rwhp/406rwtq SAE on a dynojet. Here is my car with cam:

The 4.10 gears will help solve low end driveability problems for sure. Why such a big cam ? Did you do anything to improve the compression?
Can you post the dyno sheet?. The car sounds good.

sounds good. nice car also. I would want something that sounds good, provides decent performance but has good street manners.

I kind of ran out of money but should have bumped the compression ratio. Gears would certainly help. My next power mod will most likely be a ported FAST. The cam hopefully will work well when I get heads down the road. Gears might come before heads though.

I went this cam based on recommendation from my local tuner. For the most part I like it but it does suffer a little on the low end. The 4.10 rearend helps to pick up the slack.

I went with a Comp Cams XR275HR which specs are 222/224, 566/568, 112 lsa, power range 1800 to 6500. However I bumped the specs up a little with a change of rockers to the Yella Terra 1.8 rollers. The driveability of this cam is very good no problems with idling and with air on and no problems with surging.

This is a sound clip without the Yella Terras installed

Hawaiic6: sounds real good! I'll do the math and figure out which hr cam I can run in this thing and then I'll post up.

What do you'all think of the MS3 cam ?

I just finished my Vengeance LS3 cam on my LS2 (will be LS3 swap in a few weeks) and it runs and idles excellent. Little lope at idle with the A6 (amazing) and I leave it in gear all the time at the lights with no bucking/surging. Vengeance made an awesome cam.

They specd a custom version for me since I will be running a large shot of N20.

224/235/610/620/115

I have had 5 different cams in my F-bodies (233/239/ MS3/ GT1/ 226/226 and one custom TR cam I forget) and this is by far the easiest to live with and RIPS when WOT even with the LS2 heads/intake (not optimal).

I have not had it dynoed yet since I am waiting for the heads/intake/MAF before I spend that $$. It has a Chuck COW tune from a Vengeance baseline and it runs strong, FYI.

BTW, I will be driving it 12 hrs to GA in a few weeks for Thanksgiving and then drive it back to South Florida. No worries.

You'll find alot more cam advice on LS1tech but my personal advice is the MS3 was too big for a DD. You must really like a lope to have it. I installed one in a buddies 2000 Z28 (LT's, 3500 stall, bolt ons and tune) and he ended up hating it so much he sold the car and grabbed a Cobra.

I've got the G5x3, Patriot Extreme Gold springs, stock heads, other mods in the sig. I've had about 18 months of trouble free operation in my daily driver, every day, rain or shine...and about 114 (to date) 5000 rpm dragstrip launches. The LS2 computer is easy to tune for stock drivability. My car starts great hot or cold.

I sure can't complain about reliability. If you have the job done at a quality shop the cam won't hurt reliability.

I've tracked every gallon of gas in the car since new. The gears lost me 1 mpg and the cam 1.8 in my mostly city daily drive. On the highway the cam didn't hurt mileage.

This is one of my favorite benefits. I love the sound...and the cutouts let me be nice and quiet most of the time until I feel like making some noise.

A key to being happy with the cam is increasing your compression. Putting in new thin gaskets is only a couple of hours of labor more and well worth it.

Note my torque with the cam is about the same as it was with bolt ons only.

As I type this SPINMONSTER is porting a FAST for me. Heads will be next....but down the line as my stock clutch is right at the ragged edge now. I think it'll survive the FAST but not the 30 rwhp a set of heads will give me.

I would recommend a camshaft along these lines:

230/232 .592/.595 112+2

This camshaft has 7* of overlap and will provide great power up to 6800 rpm while having excellent driveability. With the lift under .600, this will keep valvespring wear to a minimum. Check out my camshaft packages https://www.hinsonsupercars.com/s-75...-packages.aspx Let me know if you have any questions.

If you have adequate valve springs and compression, there is no limit.

Joe, when you put the FAST on here is my guess from the crystal ball I
have been using. 458/ 427 RWHPTQ. What you think ?

I would be thrilled with those results, but with my 3.90's and factory heavy clutch I doubt I will.

But I'll post up whatever I get!
