Corvettes at the Car Wash.
Hi,
The first car I ever owned by my self was a 1993 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe(C4), Polo Green Exterior/Tan Interior, I bought it used in 1999, had if for 3 years and sold it in 2001. From the first day I bought the car I have always been afraid to put it thru the car wash, because the Corvette is so different from the regular cars on the road, sits lower to the ground, shape is so radically different, size of the tires etc. Once when I was sitting in my C4 while it was going thru the car wash, i really felt that some part of the car wash system was scraping against the bottom of the car, when I took it to my corvette specialist, I was able to persuade him to put it up on the ramp because I was concerned, and we did not see anything, he told me not to worry about it.
I have a car wash place near the house that does a great job on all my cars, much better than I can possibly do my self, just because they have all the equipment, and the young people there have the energy etc, my only worry on the new Victory Red/Black Leather 1SA coupe I have ordered is that when I have had it a week and it gets dirty, can I take it to the car wash, or what does everyone else do that has a C6 Corvette.

If your car wash is the type where you pull in between the two metal rails that go around the left side wheels like a track, you have to make sure that the wheels on your C6 can fit between these rails.
Most likely, if your car wash has the rails, the C6 wheels will be scratched/damaged because the wheels are very wide.
If the car wash is a hand wash place, there should be no problem getting your C6 cleaned up there.
As for myself, I am healthy, young, and have my own driveway with garage - so the C6 is hand washed and "zainoed" by me.

I use the hand wand when I just want to get the surface dirt off....never a drive thru. You'll never get your Vette as clean as if you don't hand wash it yourself. Some of the post here show some amazing shines, it takes time and energy. It's got to be in your blood to get to this level. If you want to pay a business, speak to the person doing it, if he/she does a good job tip well and go back to the same person. No drive thru!!!!

The drive thru car washes in my area with the rails will not work. The front air dam will not clear and you will be taking a big chance of damaging your wheels in that they sit too low and will scrape on the rails.
Most of the washes do have hand washing and detailing available, but at a much higher cost and I don't like to leave my car with them without me being within spitting distance of it.
I have looked at 4 washes in my area and none will work. Hand wash or quarter wash only.

The owners manual recommends not taking a C6 through one of these steel guide car washes because of the width of the tires and the cars low clearance. You may damage your car.

I have a local car wash that will hand wash my car for a little more. One of the guys from the detail shop does it and they use clean water, mits, and towels. The same supplies the detail shop uses.
If you don't have a car wash place that you trust, try calling your local detail shops. I called one shop here and they wanted less than my local car wash place. I prefer my local car wash, because I have become friends with the owner and detail manager. I trust their work.

In the winter, as long as it is above freezing, I hook up the hose outside and fill up a 5 gal bucket with warm water from the inside. I have been doing this for all of my cars for over 30 years. Have not taken any of them to a car wash during that time. No car wash can do as good of a job as you can by hand. Besides, it is good exercise.

Touchless ONLY
Rail/Track Washers will not work. Car sits too low and wheels are too wide.
My wife and I have been using a touch less wash when cold - but last Sunday I hand washed the car - nothing better than do it by hand!
I am a proud owner of a C6 for 13 days now!

If you care about the finish on your car, you will NEVER take your car to ANY car wash...and here is why. If you are lucky enougk not to get your wheels scratched, you will still get recirculated water on your car, which is, quite often dirty. And how often are the wash mitts cleaned. Who knows what dirt is rubbed from the mit onto the surface. Finally, and most importantly, the towels used for drying (often in birght sunlight) are junk! The ONLY towel that should be used on a car for drying or buffing is a quality micro fiber towel. Not high quality cotton, not terrycloth, not junky red rags that come 75 to a bag at your local auto parts store or Costco. All of these towels cause swirl marks. A good friend of mine is in the car care proudcts business, and I have learned much from him. My Vettes NEVER have seen a carwash, and I never have swirl marks or any kind of paint damage. So get your hose out and wash it yourself, and make sure you use a quality cars wash soap!!! One of my Vettes had 90K miles on it and looked as good as the day I bought it. It's worth the effort.

Just get yourself a bottle of Prolong Waterless Wash and Shine... and you'll never use another bucket of water and hose to wash your car...only time you can't use it is in less 35 degree weather...
http://www.prolong.com/
go to the products section (appearance)...I've been using this for the past 5 years and all my vehicles shine beautifully...
