I think they look turd-ish, there are some other variants at the bottom of that web page whose bad looks increase excrementally (see what I did there?) if you're interested..
I have seen some nice home built varieties in midyear coupes that looked and performed much better...

Some people make a replacement jack board and set two speakers in it. You could put a speaker on the passenger side of the board if you do not have a stereo radio. It would look a little odd, but it might work. Dennis
Hot set up is either that 'sound board' of speakers in the Jack Cover [like mine] they make a woven speaker cloth, paint the cloth the color of the interior and it all blends away.....

How does the sound board sound? Any problems with vibration?
Look - speaker sound is about how much air can be pushed how far.
To wit, speaker cone size and magnet strength. Anytime small speakers are stuck on a board it isn't going to be the best setup... The one exception is Bose waveguide technology...
Coupla' quality 6x9s set into a carpeted mdf board in place of the jack cover board and you're all set. I have a rear amp screwed in underneath of the board, hinged at the back and rotating slide lock at the front.
A tube sub at the very back fills in the bottom sound nicely.
Like many of us the sound of the engine and everything around with the top down is usually all I need - but there are also times that you just hafta crank those tunes.

Its a custom built installation, get a custom installer to build you a system if you aren't up to it. I have a 12" sub on one side of the jack compartment and a 700 watt amp on the other with 6 1/4" speakers in custom enclosures I built in the kick panels all controlled by an Ipod. No problem clearly hearing Led Zepplin on the freeway, top down with 3 1/2" side exhaust. The stock radio and speaker are also fully functioning.

I am currently in the process of building a sub box as you have described. Got any pics of yours?

Same setup as what I have and well worth the money
I have taken my ash tray out (can be reinstalled to stock) and mounted volume control/mute buttons and simply close ashtray door when not in use!
I made a speaker board to replace the original jack cover out of 1/2" plywood. I fitted a pair of 6" round Infinity speakers (good for 60 watts rms) and routed the speaker leads under the drivers side door sill , behind the rear quarter panel and then under the board to the speakers. I covered the board with a sheet of black naugahyde for a finished look. I glued the naugahyde to the board and stapled it about 1" from the edge on the underside.
To Tom.
Sorry no pics of the box build. I lined the compartment with aluminum foil and masking tap applied release agent and laid up 3 layers of mat. Then a layer of Coremat for additional stiffness and then 2 layers of mat. The top is 1 1/2" MDF and glassed onto the box. The speaker opening is routed so that the speaker sits flush to the top, speaker attached to MDF with T nuts.

OK. Thanks. Where I am right now is 3/4 exterior plywood for the top. The 10" shallow mount sub is on the drivers side and the 700W amp is on the passenger side mounted to the underside of the board. I also used T nuts to mount the speaker and the amp. The Shallow mount sub only needs 1/2 cu ft of space so my "box" will be the drivers side only. I am going to Dynamat the stock jack area. I will use 1/2" foam tape on the jack well ledge to seal the area. Not sure how I will secure the board yet.
I have a AAR radio w/ bluetooth, twin voice coil front speaker, 2 6x9s plus a 8" subwoffer in a plywood panel with a sub box in the rear and a 5 channel amp mounted behind the right rear speaker. The sound is outstanding. You can use a 10" sub but my floor is raised 2 1/2".

My body will be off at some point and this thread has me thinking. Could speaker boxes be created and glassed into the rear without giving up interior space or limiting the conv top area storage?

NICE! Thanks
We take long trips in the car and use the cargo area. I will need to cover the speaker with some sort of substantial grill to protect it. My speaker is bottom mounted. I'm thinking I will grill the entire cover board.
