Default GM computer system hacked - ransom paid

I was at my local dealer this morning and he mentioned he could not get some info I requested due to the CDK system being hacked and ransom being paid.
He said it effects all dealers. He could not look up prices for me and said it should be back in operation by Monday.
Has anyone else heard anything about this ransomware attack?

Yes, I've heard about it. Not a GM system, it's affecting over 15,000 dealers. It's been going on since June 18th.

Why would they pay the ransom? How can you trust a hacker that they'll be good to their word?

Just was watching a report that said within 15 minutes of the system being brought back up on Monday, they were immediately hacked again. This CDK system effects every aspect of the dealership, finance dept, parts ordering, service, hell the technicians can't even bill hours or work on cars. This system (CDK) services all aspects of a dealership. This is a mess. If you have parts on order via a dealer, it might be a while-

There are two reasons such vendors consider paying ransomware. First, the lost productivity, down time, income lost by customers, potential erosion of the client base if the service is down for long.... so to save time and save face they consider paying. Second, the fix or correction is not always easy and the financial impact to the vendor themselves as well as clients can reach into the 8 and 9 digit realm quickly. Ten digits depending on the type of system. And so some $15M or $2M ransom seems quite the bargain vs QTY reports of $ -680M.

There was a system which clears the entire nation's Medicaid and Medicare billing which was hit in March or so. For two months every single bill had to be submitted individually by hand. This diverted two months of regular work in billing departments to becoming entirely just data entry/submission. Meanwhile, funds backed up significantly on a national scale. Sometimes the practical fix is to pay.

Seems to me, that if there are people who are smart enough to hack the system, there should be people equally as smart, who could root them out, and even "teach them a lesson", if you know what I mean.....

My GM dealer uses the Reynolds and Reynolds software.
No issues.

I understand your point, but if you're in the market for a brand new car, who are you going to purchase it from?? And after the sale, should recalls or warranty work be needed, who are you going to take it to, if not the dealer?

Buy used, out of warranty. Perform all work yourself.

In a perfect world, sure. In reality, almost impossible. As complicated as cars are getting, the average Joe just does not have the equipment nor working knowledge to do many repairs themselves.

And I don't like to purchase "other people's potentially problematic cast-offs"..........
