Turn signal was acting up last night on my 63. Pulled steering wheel off and noticed the pivot screw hole is stripped out in the column. Any recommendations on how to fix this? Was thinking JB weld and pit the bolt back in when it is still wet. is this an option? Any other ideas?
So, we are not talking about the area with the red arrow, correct? We are talking about the vertical female lower threaded hole? It would seem that the correct heli-coil inserted from the underside of the turn signal bracket into the bottom of the vertical threaded hole would do the trick. Your could even add a little epoxy to the Heli-coil prior to insertion.....If the special pivot bolt is good, you just reuse it....if I understand you correctly!
I just looked up the cost of a replacement cancelling ring.....Fricking expensive!!!
A helicoil is your best bet. The assembly rides on the pivot bolt and while you could JB Weld it in place, it would be very difficult to remove if you needed to in the future.
Be careful and install a helicoil, when you assemble the turn signal make sure the pivot bolt head does not tighten and hold the turn signal assembly tight. If so use a lock washer under the pivot bolt and that will allow free movement of the assembly.

It is the hole in the steering column the vertical pivot bolt screws into. Through the hole just above your arrow. Hope to do this tonight
Thinking about your task, this might be a better option because of the direction from the bottom of the cancelling ring that you need to drive the insert.
Bubba might take two pieces of fine steel wire and put in the threaded hole at 90 degree spacing. Then try to start the bolt and see if it is tight enough. I have done this on holes in sheet metal and other holes that still have some thread.
There used to be a thread repair product that you applied the epoxy in the hole and then it came with a release agent to put on the bolt before screwing it in while still liquid. I never had much luck with it, but you might try the 3M web site to see if they offer something of this type.
You are working on a one year only turn signal canceling assembly. The part you refer to with the stripped thread is called the "control assembly" in the AIM.
Often referred to as the "bell". I suggest removing the cancel ring and verify the threads on the pivot screw are ok.;If the threads in the "bell" are in fact damaged and can not be "chased" with the correct tap then you must decide "if" there is enough material to install a helicoil. IMHO, I would remove the "control assembly" AKA 'Bell" and use a drill press for accuracy when installing the helicoil. There is only one wire for the horn ground and one bowden cable to actuate the switch at the lower steering column. If more info is needed please ask. The 63 turn signal is old school analog with bell cranks and cables.....and a remote switch. I like it!
